Description

At the intersection of Broadway, Central Park West, Eighth Avenue, and 59th Street, Columbus Circle anchors a major entrance originally planned by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. Installed in 1892 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s voyage, the central monument stands within an expanded plaza featuring a fountain, trees, and benches following a redesign completed in 2005. Today, the location pairs old-world design with surrounding modern skyscrapers, serving as a busy transit hub and a frequent gathering space near the park's southwest corner.
