Chinatown's Oldest Streets on a 90-Minute History Walk
A museum educator walks up to 15 people from the Lenape village of Werpoes Hill to the Chinatown of today.
🏮 Saturday Morning at MOCA
🧭 From Lenape Land to Chinatown Today
The Museum of Chinese in America runs this walk from its Centre Street lobby, and the educator reads Chinatown through its buildings. The tenements, storefronts and side streets you pass every day start to read as a record of who lived and worked here. The museum names the oldest streets in Chinatown, a busy neighborhood park, and a Catholic church with layered histories among the stops, along with Chinatown's oldest general store and an eatery that once fed the bachelor society of the early 1900s.
👟 On Your Feet the Whole Way
Groups are capped at 15 people, which keeps the educator audible on narrow Chinatown sidewalks. Plan to stand for the full 90 minutes, with little public seating and uneven pavement in places. The route runs about one to one and a half miles, the walk back to the museum included. Recording is not allowed, and photos or short clips depend on the educator's call on the day. The museum also asks guests to get permission before photographing anyone who lives or works on the block. Anyone with mobility or access needs should email the museum's education team before booking, and the museum suggests bringing rain gear if the forecast turns wet.
🎟️ Tickets, Timing, and Lunch
The walk leaves promptly at 11:30 AM on Saturday, November 7, from the main lobby at 215 Centre Street and wraps around 1:00 PM. Adult tickets are $25, seniors 55 and up and students pay $20, and children under 5 go free, with museum admission included before or after. Booking ahead is required through the museum's RSVP, and day-of tickets only appear when space remains. The museum recommends it for ages 12 and up. The Canal St subway station, served by the 6, J, Z, N, Q, R and W trains, is about a three-minute walk south of the museum. Eating waits until the end, when the educator can leave you at the last stop with a few neighborhood picks.
