Brooklyn Basketball Courts with a 1636 Backstory
Play at Andries Playground, where a neighborhood recreation stop sits beside Junior High School 240.
🏀 A Court With History
Andries Playground puts basketball courts and play space into your next Midwood outing. Bring a ball and make the court your starting point for an afternoon outside, with a piece of Brooklyn history waiting behind the name. Find it on Nostrand Avenue between Avenue K and Avenue L, with the park open daily from 6 AM to 9 PM.
Next door sits Junior High School 240. The school and playground both take their names from Andries Hudde, a Dutch government servant in the seventeenth century. That shared name connects this neighborhood recreation stop to a much larger chapter of the colonial story.
In 1636, Hudde purchased 3,600 acres from Native Americans. The tract included this site and the surrounding neighborhood. A session here puts a modern game beside a history that reaches across the area, far beyond the boundaries of the playground itself.
