Bring a Cup of Backyard Soil to Governors Island
Free handheld screening of backyard soil samples for lead and other heavy metals, with results explained on the spot.
🧪 The Screening
🌍 Why Dirt Gets Tested
The Urban Soils Institute runs this screening with Earth Matter at the Compost Learning Center. A handheld analyzer reads each sample for lead, arsenic, and other heavy metals, and staff explain the numbers while the reading is still on screen. City soil carries a long industrial memory, and a single garden bed can read very differently from the one beside it. The October 24 session runs four hours and costs nothing.
🥄 Collecting a Sample That Works
Choose one area to sample, a vegetable bed, a bare patch, or a pile of fill. Dig down four to eight inches depending on what worries you, pull out sticks and stones, and put about a cup into a sealed bag. Label each bag with your name, the date, and where it came from. Three samples per person is the limit, and staff take the last drop offs well before closing.
⛴️ Ferry Timing and Order of Arrival
Walk in testing needs no booking, and samples get screened in the order they arrive. Showing up near noon beats drifting in at three. The Compost Learning Center sits on Governors Island, reached by ferry from Lower Manhattan or Brooklyn, and the walk from the landing takes a few minutes. Gardeners, new homeowners, and anyone with a backyard question will get the most from the afternoon. You carry your samples home after testing.
