A Beacon Art Day Trip: Dia's Giant Installations, Then Restaurant Week Dinner

Dia Beacon's galleries were built around pieces no normal room can hold, and Restaurant Week's county list carries exactly one address in town. The day runs one way: steel first, then 17 minutes up Main Street for a $44.95 three-course dinner, on the only two days both are open.

Go Friday or Sunday.

Start with the steel

Rooms built around the work

Dia Beacon is a 300,000-square-foot former Nabisco box-printing plant where 34,000 square feet of skylights do most of the lighting and each gallery was sized for one artist. Richard Serra's Torqued Ellipses — Torqued Ellipse I and II, Double Torqued Ellipse, and 2000 — stand in the building's former train shed, tall steel walls curving one inside another. Michael Heizer's North, East, South, West is sunk into the floor, and Dia runs a walk-through at 9:30 am on open days: 30 minutes, ten people, 18 and over, no photography, included with admission. Artist rooms for Louise Bourgeois and Agnes Martin hold the other end; Agnes Martin: Painting is not making paintings stays until April 3, 2028. Give it two to three hours. From November 1 Dia opens Friday to Monday, 10 am to 4 pm, with entry until 3:30 — its booking calendar lists every session in this run at 10:00–16:00 and its ticket page moves closing and last entry an hour earlier; closed Tuesday to Thursday. $25 adults, $18 seniors, $12 students, $5 children 5 to 11, free for Beacon and Newburgh residents. Public tours Saturday and Sunday at noon and 1:30, free with admission.

One address in town, $44.95

Restaurant Week is not a voucher: you book a table, order the fixed menu and pay the restaurant. Beacon's entry on the county list is Estilo Y Vino, 173 Main Street, whose prix-fixe dinner is $44.95 — an appetizer, an entrée and a dessert — served Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays between November 2 and 16. Drinks, tax and tip come on top, and the menu does not run every night the room is open, so ask for it when you book: the reservation link on the restaurant's site, or 845.863.7162. From the museum door it is 1.3 km up Main Street, about 17 minutes on foot. Hours otherwise: dark Monday and Tuesday, Wednesday 5:30 to 9:30 with no kitchen, Thursday and Friday from 5:30, Saturday from 2, Sunday 2 to 7. Fishkill and Poughkeepsie are on the same list, and the county's own page notes that several participating restaurants are within walking distance of Metro-North stops in Beacon and Poughkeepsie.

The train, and the two days that work

Hudson Line trains from Grand Central take about 90 minutes, and the museum is an 8 to 10 minute walk from the Beacon station, which makes the whole loop train, galleries, dinner, train. Dia opens Friday to Monday; the $44.95 menu runs Thursday, Friday and Sunday. That leaves Friday or Sunday. On Friday the 4 pm close leaves a 90-minute gap before Estilo opens at 5:30; on Sunday the kitchen is already serving when you walk out, so dinner follows the galleries without a wait, though the room closes at 7. Check the last train back before you book a late table.
