Ballard Locks: Watch a Boat Rise, Then Warm Up at Stoup

One working ship lock, free to walk through, and one heated taproom half an hour east.

Two stops, and the first is free.

🗺️ Ballard Locks to Stoup Brewing

🚢 Start at the lock wall

Vessels transit between Puget Sound and Lake Washington throughout the day, though boat traffic varies with tide and traffic so allow time for a locking cycle. Stand along the lock wall at 3015 NW 54th Street to watch vessels tied off in the chamber as water fills or drains. Grounds are free daily 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. The fish ladder viewing room is also open daily 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. alongside the grounds (closing only for about two weeks of maintenance in mid-May), while visitor center exhibits keep separate seasonal hours.

🍺 Walk to the brewery district

The walk east to 1108 NW 52nd Street is about 1.4 miles and takes roughly half an hour along neighborhood sidewalks with no weather cover. Stoup opens daily from noon to 10 p.m., serving craft beer with covered and heated outdoor seating plus a warm indoor taproom. Specific patio tables cannot be reserved, and open outdoor areas remain subject to the elements.

🌧️ Treat it as a rain plan

Set aside two to three hours for the pair to take in a locking without rushing, then complete the open-air walk to Ballard brewery district. While the locks and Stoup have sheltered viewing areas, the 1.4-mile walk is fully outdoors so rain gear is essential on wet days. Neither stop requires a booking, making this a flexible afternoon plan.
