💀 Sunday at MoMI
🪶 Dance and Music
The Museum of the Moving Image and the Mexican Cultural Institute mark Día de Muertos on Sunday, November 1, in the museum's Kaufman Courtyard in Astoria. The afternoon centers on Aztec Mexica dance performances with music from the Indigenous troupe Yayauhki Tezcatlipoka, while the Mexican Folkloric Ballet of New York adds regional folk dance to the program. Admission to the celebration is free and open to all ages.
🎨 Face Paint and Ofrenda
Between performances, a free face painting session takes its looks from historical characters, and families can try digital media activities during the afternoon. Artist and historian Rosa Ruíz and Catrinamía present the public ofrenda, and the altar stays open to walk up close before a Catrina and Catrín costume contest takes over.
🚇 Hours and Getting There
The program runs from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Sunday, November 1, at 36-01 35th Avenue in Astoria, Queens. The R stops at Steinway Street, about nine minutes on foot, and the N at 36th Avenue, about seven minutes. Free entry covers the celebration itself. It suits every age, from longtime celebrants to anyone seeing Aztec and Mexican folk dance for the first time.
