Description

The site commemorates Anibal Aviles, who lived on nearby West 109th Street. Before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps to serve in the Vietnam War—where he was killed in action in 1966—Aviles was deeply rooted in the local sports scene. He participated in neighborhood athletic programs, belonged to the Catholic Youth Organization, and served as captain of the basketball and track teams at J.H.S. 54.
