Amano's Pandora Drawings Take Over a Washington Heights Gallery
Final Fantasy's longtime character designer takes over the academy galleries with Pandora drawings and a library of 1980s anime.
🖼️ A Frieze of Pandora
Walk in through the gate on Broadway and the first room is a low, continuous line of Pandora drawings, hung close enough that the series reads like a frieze or a storyboard. You can track the Greek myth by walking the wall.
The library next door holds the older material, illustrated books, animation cels and glossy game magazines from the 1980s and 1990s, with a CRT monitor playing an anime film and a vitrine of Final Fantasy cartridges.
Admission is free and the galleries run Thursday to Sunday, noon to six, and the whole show fits into an afternoon on Broadway at 155th Street. This is Amano's first institutional solo show in New York. The academy closes for Thanksgiving on November 26 and 27 and again from December 24 through January 1.
