A Houston Folk Art Home Wears Over 50,000 Flattened Cans
Walk the grounds near Washington Avenue and listen to the distinctive sound of this recycled creation.
🥫 An Everyday Material Transformed
Beer Can House takes an everyday material somewhere wonderfully unexpected. At 222 Malone St near Washington Avenue, this neighborhood home is covered in over 50,000 flattened beer cans. It sits among regular residences on a quiet Houston street, with a folk art project where you might expect another ordinary home.
John Milkovisch built the work between 1968 and 1988. Walk the grounds for a closer look at the layered recycled materials, then step inside the house to continue exploring. Keep your ears open as well as your eyes, the cans produce their own distinctive sound.
Docents lead guided tours that share the background of the project. Take that opportunity to hear the story behind the transformation, rather than treating the exterior as the whole experience. There is also a souvenir shop on site, an extra stop before returning to the neighborhood around this unusual home.
