A Domed Campus Chapel With Intimate Concert Acoustics
Explore a domed chapel for stained glass, Romanesque detail, and intimate concerts on Columbia’s campus.
🏛️ A Quiet Campus Pause
Columbia University has a quiet interruption to its campus bustle at 1160 Amsterdam Ave. Completed in 1907, this Italian Renaissance revival chapel pairs Romanesque architecture with a large dome and colorful stained glass windows. The brickwork deserves a lingering look, with patterns overhead that turn the curved ceiling into part of the attraction. Rows of wooden pews lead toward an altar, while a hanging light draws the eye upward.
There is another reason to settle into those seats. Alongside services and events, the chapel hosts recitals and concerts that benefit from intimate acoustics. That combination gives this university setting a role as both a place of worship and a room for listening.
For a weekday pause, the chapel is open from 9 AM until half past nine PM, while Saturday and Sunday hours run from noon to half past eight PM.
