A Chicago Weekend Where Every Stop Is Indoors
Six indoor stops for the cold weekend of 6–8 November in Chicago: a Friday jazz set in Uptown, Saturday at the Field Museum and a South Loop deep dish, Sunday brunch in Logan Square and a bookshop with wine.
🎷 Friday · Dinner in Andersonville, then the jazz room
Start at Anteprima on North Clark, open Wednesday to Sunday from 5 pm and until 9 pm on Fridays. Uptown is a mile south, so leave room for the walk or a short ride to Green Mill, where the doors open at 4 pm and the room runs first come, 21 and over, cash only. Friday 6 November runs three sets, each with its own cover: Chris Foreman at 5:15 pm is listed without a cover charge, Nick Mazzarella's quintet plays 8 pm to midnight for $20, and the Green Mill Jam Session with Marquis Hill runs 1 to 3:30 am for $5.
🏛 Saturday · A natural history hall, then deep dish
Field Museum opens daily at 9 am and takes its last entry at 4 pm, which leaves an afternoon for the permanent halls without racing the clock. From Museum Campus it is just under a mile to Lou Malnati's in the South Loop, roughly 15 to 20 minutes on foot, and the dining room stays open until midnight on Saturday. Deep dish is built to order; tables can run a wait, and the bar seats sometimes move faster.
📚 Sunday · Brunch on Milwaukee, then books and a glass
Stay Cafe on North Milwaukee opens at 7 am and closes at 2 pm every day and takes reservations; the weekend brunch plates come off the same all-day menu. Passages Wine and Books opens at 11 am and runs to 7 pm: a bookstore and wine café on West Chicago Avenue. The two sit about two miles apart, so plan a short ride rather than a walk in the cold.
☔ Plan B for cold, crowds and a thin budget
Cold or rain: every stop on this route is indoors, so the weather only matters on the way between them. When it turns cold or wet, take a short ride instead of walking: the two Friday stops, Museum Campus to the South Loop, and Logan Square to West Town are each a few minutes by car or train.
Crowds: the Field Museum takes its last entry at 4 pm, so arrive before noon on Saturday. Stay Cafe books up on Sunday mornings, so reserve. Green Mill takes no reservations, so arrive before the set you want. At Lou Malnati's, the bar seats sometimes clear faster than the tables.
Tight budget: stay on general admission instead of adding a paid special exhibition, share a deep dish, and skip the wine at Passages. Green Mill prices each set separately — no cover listed for the 5:15 pm set, $20 for the 8 pm quintet, $5 for the 1 am jam — so the early set is the budget entry and the jam the cheap late option. Stay Cafe's early-bird special runs weekday mornings only, so budget for the regular brunch prices on Sunday.
