A Chapel with Fourteen Dark Rothko Canvases in Houston
Pause among abstract paintings in a sanctuary for all people, with time for personal reflection.
🎨 Art For Personal Reflection
Rothko Chapel asks you to slow a Houston art outing right down. At 3900 Yupon St, the sanctuary places you in a room surrounded by large abstract paintings. Fourteen monumental dark canvases by Mark Rothko give you plenty to sit with. Resist racing from one canvas to the next, and let contemplation take the lead.
Conceived as a sanctuary for all people, the chapel welcomes meditation alongside looking at art. Knowledgeable docents are part of the experience, which centers on quietude and peace. Beyond the room, the grounds extend the setting for a pause before you return to the city.
The chapel is closed on Monday, open Tuesday and Wednesday and Friday through Sunday from 10 AM to 6 PM, and Thursday from 10 AM to half past four PM. Give the paintings your attention, then carry that slower pace into the rest of your afternoon.
