Yume Ga Arukara: Boston's Cult Udon Lands in NoMad
Daily-made udon, beef-topped bowls and a glass atrium, a short walk north of Madison Square Park.
🍜 What to Order First
Yume Ga Arukara means “because I have a dream,” and the Cambridge counter behind it opened a Manhattan branch at 271 Fifth Avenue on October 21 — its first outside Massachusetts, after a 2017 start in a Lesley University food court and a 2024 Seaport shop. Bon Appétit put the original at number eight on its 2018 Hot 10 list.
Order cold first. The Signature Cold Niku Udon is the one to start with: thick noodles, a cold dipping sauce and sweet-savory beef, which is how the shop says its udon should be eaten. The Spicy Cold Niku Udon goes chile-forward, and Hot Niku Udon serves the same beef hot. Everything is made in-house daily, noodles included, on a machine imported from Japan.
Upstairs is the main dining room over Fifth Avenue, with a glass-enclosed atrium garden for extra daylight seating; downstairs, bar seats face the open kitchen. It’s open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day, no reservations — first come, first served. The line outside can be slow, and solo diners tend to move faster.
