A Ballard Dive Where Bands Play The Back Room

Touring bands and local acts fill a red-lit back room at this Ballard Avenue dive bar in Seattle.

🎸 The back room

Sunset Tavern is a dive bar and live-music room on Ballard Avenue NW in Seattle, with a small back-room stage that books touring bands and local acts. The front is a narrow barroom strung with holiday lights, red walls, and a Rainier Beer sign glowing over the bottles.

Past the bar, the stage sits low and close to the floor, and the standing crowd ends up within a few feet of the band. Behind the amps, a bass drum head painted The Sunset Tavern marks the back wall, a detail regulars photograph between sets.

The space leans loud and unpolished, with mismatched stools, a scuffed concrete floor, and a patterned red backdrop behind the drum kit. Doors open in the evening, and the bar keeps pouring through the sets.
