18 Miles of Books at Strand, Then a Skate at Bryant Park
One store keeps 2.5 million books on shelves that stretch eighteen miles and rolls dollar carts onto Broadway every morning; twenty minutes north, Bryant Park gives its winter to a free rink. Two stops, one cold afternoon.

📚 Start at the Dollar Carts
Strand opens at 10 AM every day, and the dollar carts are already out on Broadway — hardcovers, paperbacks and remainders stacked by price, which is where regulars begin. Inside, the shelves run about eighteen miles and hold more than 2.5 million used, new and rare books, so pick two floors and let the rest go. The Rare Book Room keeps shorter hours of its own, posted at the store. Browsing is free and needs no booking.

⛸️ Skate, or Watch From the Deck
Walk ten minutes west to 14 St–6 Av and ride the F three stops to 42 St–Bryant Park, surfacing at Sixth Avenue and 42nd Street on the park's west edge — twenty minutes door to door. Winter Village opens October 28, 2026; the rink runs 8 AM to 10 PM daily through February 28, 2027, until midnight November 19–January 3, and closes at 8 PM on January 31. Skating is free only with your own skates and a timed session booked ahead; rental skates run $18.72 to $64.48 before tax. Sessions last about 50 minutes.

🧥 The Order That Works
The stops sit 1.6 miles apart — 30 to 35 minutes up Broadway on foot — so the train saves the time and the walk stays optional. Two hours at Strand lands you on the ice before the afternoon rush. Off the ice, The Lodge, the rink-side bar and food hall, pours hot chocolate and mulled wine from 10 AM to 10 PM, and until 11:30 PM on select peak days; the rink runs rain or shine, though heavy rain can close the ice and severe weather the park.
