$15 Social Hour Cocktails Above NYC, Then Grand Central's Whispering Gallery
A 1928 sorority club turned glass-wrapped lounge over the East River, then a tiled vault where a whisper crosses the room.
Ophelia to the Whispering Gallery
🍸 Social Hour at the 26th-Floor Bar
Ophelia sits on the 26th floor of Beekman Tower, at 49th Street and First Avenue, and it is the first stop of the evening. Social Hour runs Monday to Friday, 5 to 7 PM, at the bar only. The $15 price covers two classics, a French 75 or a Manhattan, and the rest of the list is not part of the deal. Select wine is $14, a trio of mini cocktails is $30, and bites are $10. Take a bar seat close to 5 PM, and from November to early March the East River and the Queensboro Bridge are already lit before 7.

🗣️ Whisper Across a Grand Central Vault
After Social Hour, walk to Grand Central and head down to the Dining Concourse on the Lower Level. The Whispering Gallery is the large Guastavino-tiled vault at the entrance of the Oyster Bar. Face one corner while a friend faces the opposite one, then talk at a normal volume and listen for the voice running along the ceiling. The terminal lists 5:15 AM to 2 AM, but its dining concourse keeps its own hours. Aim for the early evening, while the Oyster Bar is open, Monday to Friday until 9:30 PM.

🕰️ A 1928 Sorority Club, a 17-Minute Walk
The tower opened in 1928 as the Panhellenic Tower, a hotel for women from college sororities, and the 26th floor was their social club. It later ran as a lounge called Top of the Tower, sat closed for about a decade, and reopened as Ophelia in February 2018 with a greenhouse terrace wrapped around the bar. From the lobby, Grand Central is about 1.3 km away, roughly 17 minutes on foot. Leave the bar at 7 PM and you reach the vault before 7:30, with two hours left before the Oyster Bar closes.
