There is an unwritten rule among people who live in Los Angeles that you do not go to Hollywood Boulevard on purpose. It is a rule with a lot of justification behind it and almost everyone follows it, which produces a peculiar side effect: on a Saturday in autumn, when every sports bar on the Westside and the east side is three deep at the rail, the boulevard's pubs have tables. The crowd filling them is not looking for football. It is looking for the stars in the pavement, and it clears out by early evening.

The hours do most of the work
Open from 11.30am to 2am Monday through Friday and from 11am to 2am at weekends, which is a wider window than almost anything in the category and the reason it solves problems other bars cannot. An 11am Saturday opening covers every college football window that matters on Pacific time, including the noon Eastern games that land at nine here — those you will need a different room for — and comfortably everything from the late-morning slate onwards. A 2am close means the day does not have to end when the football does.
Then there is the happy hour, which runs two-for-one Monday to Friday from noon until eight in the evening. Eight hours is not a happy hour in the normal sense of the phrase; it is an operating philosophy. For a Friday-night game or a weekday bowl fixture it turns an ordinary afternoon into a considerably cheaper one, and it is the single best reason to know this address if you work anywhere near central Hollywood.
What is actually in the room
Large screens throughout, positioned so that sightlines hold from most of the floor rather than only from the bar — a small thing that separates rooms built for sport from rooms that merely bought televisions. The kitchen runs classic pub food, and the house event is an all-you-can-eat prime rib night attached to the sports schedule, which is an unusual and very welcome thing to find on a boulevard where most of the food is priced for people who will never come back.
The whiskey list is the other half of the identity and it is not decorative. This is a pub that pours properly, which matters more in November than in September: a long afternoon of college football in a dark room is improved considerably by having something to drink slowly. There is sidewalk seating out front too, which on a warm Saturday gives you the strange and quite enjoyable experience of watching a game through an open door while a street performer works the pavement six feet away.
The case against, honestly
You should know what you are walking into. This is the Walk of Fame, so the pavement outside is dense, loud and occasionally chaotic, and the crowd inside will include people who wandered in from it. If what you want is a room full of people who care about the same game you care about, an alumni chapter bar somewhere quieter will serve you far better, and the difference in atmosphere is not subtle.
What you get instead is availability, hours and price. Those three things are worth a great deal on the specific Saturdays when everything else in the city is full — rivalry weekends, bowl season, the days when your ordinary bar has a line outside it at half past eleven in the morning. Treat the boulevard as the reliable fallback rather than the first choice and it will not let you down. The other thing worth saying is that the tourist crowd is a daytime phenomenon: it thins noticeably after about six in the evening, so a night game here is a completely different and much calmer experience from an afternoon one, and the pub becomes a neighbourhood room again once the pavement outside empties out.
Getting there without regret
Do not drive to Hollywood Boulevard on a Saturday. The Metro B Line runs directly underneath it, with stations at Hollywood and Highland and at Hollywood and Vine bracketing this stretch, and either leaves you a short flat walk from the door. Parking structures exist off the boulevard and they are expensive, slow to exit, and entirely avoidable. This is one of perhaps four places in Los Angeles where transit is straightforwardly the better option, and a day that involves several hours of drinking is exactly the day to use it.
