Los Angeles is a city where a fifteen-mile trip can take an hour or twenty minutes depending entirely on when you leave, and almost every guide to watching sport here ignores that fact completely. The standard advice for a UCLA game is to go to Westwood, because that is where the campus is and where the famous bars are. For anyone living east of the 405 or south of the 10, that advice is quietly terrible. You will spend ninety minutes in a car in order to stand in a crowded room two hundred metres from a stadium the team does not even play in.

The alumni association solved this a long time ago, and hardly anyone outside the mailing list seems to know. The Westside room
Busby's West at 3110 Santa Monica Boulevard is the designated Westside venue, run under the UCLA Westside Sports banner. Santa Monica Boulevard here is a very different proposition from Westwood Village: a wide, unglamorous stretch with actual parking, a room built for large groups rather than a queue of students, and a drive that from most of the Westside is measured in single-digit minutes. If you live anywhere between the beach and Century City, this is almost certainly your room and there is no version of the argument where driving inland to the Village beats it.
The important distinction is between a bar that will have UCLA on and a bar where the alumni group is organising the day. The second gives you sound on the right game, a block of tables held for people who said they were coming, and the reasonable certainty that walking in alone will not be awkward. That is the whole point of the designation.
The Southeast room
Joseph's Bar & Grill at 11032 Downey Avenue in Downey covers the southeast of the county, which is the part of Los Angeles that gets ignored most reliably by every list of anything. For families in Downey, Norwalk, Whittier, Bellflower and Cerritos, the difference between a local watch party and a trip to Westwood is not a matter of preference — it is the difference between going and not going. A room fifteen minutes away with the game on and other people in blue and gold is worth more than a better room an hour away, every single Saturday.
There is a second reason the satellite rooms tend to be more pleasant than the campus ones, and it is demographic. A regional watch party draws alumni who graduated across five decades rather than undergraduates who have not graduated at all. The volume is lower, the seating is real, and the food is ordered rather than shouted about. Whether that sounds better or worse to you is a matter of temperament, but it is a genuine difference and nobody ever mentions it.
How to use the system properly
The venues and regional contacts are published by the alumni association and they do move between seasons, which is the one piece of friction in the whole arrangement. A bar closes, a contact changes job, a region gets a new room. So the correct habit is to check the current listings at the start of a season rather than relying on a page you bookmarked two years ago — the same mistake that has people turning up to venues that shut months earlier.
It is also worth knowing that the watch-party network is not limited to football. The same regional structure carries basketball through the winter and spring, and a room you found in October is generally still the room in March. Showing up once in autumn is the cheapest way to have somewhere to go for the rest of the year.

When Westwood is still right
None of this is an argument against the Village, which remains the correct destination for two specific cases. The first is a home game at the Rose Bowl, where the pre-game and post-game traffic is part of the experience and being in Westwood puts you inside it. The second is a marquee rivalry Saturday, where the sheer density of people is the thing you are going for and no regional room can reproduce it. For the other eight or nine Saturdays of a season, the nearest official room wins on every measure that matters, and the drive you did not make is the best part of the day.
