Melrose Avenue is not an early street. The shops open around eleven, the restaurants later, and for a long stretch of the morning the whole corridor is essentially closed. The seven o'clock open is the genuinely useful end. West Hollywood at seven in the morning is quiet, the parking that will be impossible at two in the afternoon is available, and the room itself is calm. By eleven it is a busy Melrose café with the queue that implies.

The house style sits in the modern American specialty register — cleaner and brighter than a traditional dark roast, but not as aggressively light as the Scandinavian school. It is an approachable position and it works well across a range of origins.
The room, and how it is used
The Melrose space is designed rather than merely fitted out, and it functions as a meeting room for a stretch of the city that runs a great deal of its business informally. At ten in the morning a substantial fraction of the tables are people having conversations that would be meetings anywhere else.
That makes it pleasant to sit in and less suited to focused solo work than a quieter neighbourhood room. If you need to concentrate, come at seven. If you want to be somewhere with a bit of energy, ten to noon is exactly right.
Where it sits on Melrose
Eighty-nine twenty-five Melrose puts you in West Hollywood, close to the Pacific Design Center and within walking distance of the design showrooms and galleries that occupy this stretch. That is a different Melrose from the vintage-and-streetwear corridor further east around Fairfax.
Knowing which Melrose you are on matters. The shopping most visitors mean when they say Melrose is east of here; this end is design, dining and West Hollywood proper. Both are walkable but they are not the same afternoon.
Parking, which is the real constraint
This is Los Angeles and the parking is the deciding factor for most people. Street parking on and around Melrose is metered, time-limited and heavily contested from late morning onward, and the surrounding residential blocks are permit-restricted.
Before nine in the morning it is genuinely easy. After eleven it is a real search. That single fact is the strongest argument for making this an early stop rather than an afternoon one, more so than anything about the room or the coffee.
The other Los Angeles rooms
There are further Verve locations across the county, including on West Third Street and in the Arts District on Mateo Street, and the coffee is consistent across them. If you are downtown or on the Westside, the nearest one is the right answer rather than a drive to Melrose.
Note that the South Spring Street location downtown is listed as closed, so check before setting out for a specific address. The chain's own locations page is more reliable than a general search, which will happily return rooms that no longer exist.
The pastry case, and what else is on the counter
There is a small food offering alongside the coffee and it changes, which is the correct scale for a room that is fundamentally a roastery café rather than a bakery. Whatever has come out most recently is the right order; nothing here is baked in such quantity that yesterday's version is still sitting there.
If you are meeting somebody and want to make it a proper stop rather than a coffee, this works for about an hour before the room fills. Beyond that you are occupying a table on one of the busiest café stretches in West Hollywood, and the queue will let you know.
How to use it well
Arrive at seven or half past, take a filter coffee and something from the pastry case, and use the hour before the neighbourhood wakes up. Then walk — the Pacific Design Center is a few minutes away and the streets around it are pleasant and empty at that hour.
By the time Melrose actually opens you will have had the best part of the morning, parked without difficulty, and be ahead of a corridor that spends the rest of the day at capacity. That sequencing is the whole argument for a seven o'clock coffee on a street like this.
