Dandelion Chocolate's Factory and Café Kuramae, at 4-14-6 Kuramae, Taito-ku, Tokyo 111-0051, turns raw cacao into bars on its ground floor and serves them upstairs, with a Chef's Tasting plate at ¥2,300 and s'mores at ¥800. It opens 10:00 to 19:00, and the phone number is 03-5833-7270. Searching gourmet chocolate near me in east Tokyo leads here, to the San Francisco maker's first shop outside its home city, opened in February 2016.

A Showa-Era Warehouse Facing a Park

The café occupies a warehouse more than 50 years old, renovated by the design studio Puddle and finished in 2016, according to the architecture site Tecture. Time Out Tokyo describes it as a Showa-era building of about 380 square metres. Big windows face a small park, and the brick, steel and timber interior keeps the industrial bones visible. It is a four-minute walk from Kuramae Station on the Toei Asakusa and Oedo lines, per Time Out.

There is no car park, and the shop asks visitors not to stop on the road outside, so come by train, bicycle or on foot. The ground floor holds the factory and a counter selling bars and gifts. The second floor is the café and workshop space, with long tables where you can watch roasting and grinding through glass below. Even a ten-minute visit to buy bars gives you a view of production. Watching the roaster and grinders from the café floor is the clearest demonstration in Tokyo of what bean-to-bar means in practice: cacao arrives in sacks, and it leaves the same building as wrapped, single-origin bars sold a few metres away.

From a San Francisco Garage to the Sumida

Todd Masonis and Cameron Ring founded Dandelion in San Francisco in 2010, starting in a friend's garage, says the company's Japanese about page. Kuramae was the brand's first shop outside San Francisco, and Time Out reported its opening on 11 February 2016. The Japanese business is run by Dandelion Chocolate Japan, whose chief executive is Seiji Horibuchi. The company marked ten years in Japan in February 2026 with a loyalty programme.

That decade has produced more Tokyo outposts. The Market Kichijoji, on the second floor of Atré Kichijoji, opens 10:00 to 21:00, and a new Kiyosumi-Shirakawa Factory at 4-10-5 Hirano, Koto-ku, opens on 30 October 2026, with factory tours starting in early November and tickets sold on Peatix. Kuramae remains the original, and the one where café, factory and shop share a single building.

What to Order Upstairs

The Chef's Tasting at ¥2,300 is the café's showcase, a plate of small desserts built from the house chocolate, and it suits anyone who wants to understand the bars in one sitting. The Brownie Bite Flight costs ¥1,200 and lines up brownies made with different origins side by side. A single chocolate brownie is ¥800 and a chocolate chip cookie ¥650. The s'mores, at ¥800, arrive with a toasted marshmallow on top.

Seasonal items rotate. Through 31 October 2026, Kuramae serves a Pumpkin Hot Chocolate for ¥1,000, and a chocolate Mont Blanc costs ¥1,100. The drinks list also includes a Kuramae Hot Chocolate flavoured with organic hojicha from Shizuoka, made only at this branch, which is the drink to choose if you want something you cannot order at Kichijoji. Skip the cookie if you are sharing; the tasting plate covers more ground.

Single-Origin Bars at the Counter

Dandelion's bars contain only cacao and cane sugar, and each wrapper names a single origin. On the official store the 70% bars from Semuliki Forest in Uganda, Paliméi in Togo and Maya Mountain in Belize each cost ¥1,600, as does an 85% Uganda bar. Tasting them side by side shows how far beans can differ: the Ugandan bar leans fruity, while Belize is rounder. Staff at the ground-floor counter will talk through origins.

For gifts, Chocolate Marshmallows went on sale on 16 October 2026 at ¥2,900 a box in Kuramae, Ise, Kichijoji and online. Hot Chocolate Melt, flakes for making the drink at home, costs ¥780 and is the easiest souvenir to pack. Bars keep better than the café's desserts, which are made to be eaten on the spot, so buy desserts to eat upstairs and bars to carry home.

Seating Rules and Quiet Hours

The café's drinks menu asks guests to limit stays to about 90 minutes, and staff may ask you to move seats when it is busy. Eat-in and takeaway carry different tax rates in Japan, so tell the cashier which you want before paying. Weekend afternoons fill with couples and visitors on Kuramae café tours, and seats can run short around 14:00. Weekday mornings soon after 10:00 are the calmest, when the light through the park-side windows is at its best and the roaster is usually running. If you only need bars, you can skip the café queue entirely and pay at the ground-floor counter.

The official site lists no regular closing day. Over New Year 2025 to 2026 the café opened only until 15:00 on 31 December and closed on 1 and 2 January, so expect a similar break this winter. If every table is taken, buy bars downstairs and walk to the river, or take the Oedo Line to Kiyosumi-shirakawa once the new factory opens and try your luck there.

Stationery and River Walks Nearby

Kuramae is known for small workshops and makers, and the chocolate pairs well with a short walk. Kakimori, the custom notebook and ink shop, is at 1-6-2 Misuji, Taito-ku, just north of Kuramae, open 11:00 to 18:00 and closed on Mondays. The Sumida River promenade is a few minutes east of the café, and on a clear afternoon its walkways look across the water toward Tokyo Skytree.
