NOHGA HOTEL UENO TOKYO opened on 1 November 2018 as the very first NOHGA hotel, the lifestyle brand run by Nomura Real Estate Hotels. It stands at 2-21-10 Higashi-Ueno, Taito-ku, Tokyo 110-0015, on a side street just east of Ueno Station, and its 127 rooms are stocked with hangers, notepads and key cards made by craftspeople from the surrounding wards. For anyone typing boutique hotel near me around Ueno Park and its museums, it is a 3-minute walk from the Ginza and Hibiya line platforms.

Exit 3, the Joyo Bank, Then the Seven-Eleven Corner

The hotel's own walking directions start at Tokyo Metro Ueno Station on the Ginza and Hibiya lines, 3 minutes away. Leave by Exit 3, turn back along the pavement, take the first right at the Joyo Bank and walk straight for about 2 minutes; the hotel sits on the corner just past a Seven-Eleven. With heavy cases, use the lift between Exits 2 and 3 marked for Showa Dori, then turn left at the same bank instead.

From the JR side it is a 5-minute walk. Use the Iriya Gate, also called the Panda Bridge Exit, not the similarly named Iriya Exit, ride the outdoor escalators down to the pedestrian bridge and pass the large orange monument. At the far end, go down to street level, turn right at the second corner and the hotel is ahead within a minute. Keisei Ueno, where the Skyliner from Narita arrives, is 7 minutes away on foot, passing under the railway tracks and across Showa Dori.

The access page lists JR fares to Ueno that show how central the address is: Akihabara is 3 minutes for ¥150 cash, Tokyo Station 8 minutes, and Shinjuku 20 minutes. Haneda Terminals 1 and 2 are about 45 minutes by train. Drivers get a rare option for central Tokyo, because the hotel has 8 parking spaces at ¥3,000 per car per night, from 3 pm to 11 am, though they are first come, first served and cannot be reserved in advance.

Nomura's First NOHGA and the Myoga Behind the Name

NOHGA was built around a simple brief: connect deeply with the neighbourhood and let guests feel it. Ueno was the brand's first test, and the hotel's theme here is CRAFT Your Senses, an invitation to meet the artisans who still work in Taito's back streets. The name has its own story. The bistro explains that myoga, written with characters meaning unexpected happiness or good fortune, inspired the hotel name, and the restaurant now serves a gin cocktail called Bistro MYOHGA in its honour.

The art programme is curated by Teruo Kurosaki, founder of the Tokyo design store IDEE, together with Hozu Yamamoto, with help from 3331 Arts Chiyoda. Works on permanent display include stone arrangements by Tokyo University of the Arts professor Takeshi Hayashi in the NOHGA Suite and textiles by Reiko Sudo of NUNO in the rooms. The first-floor Lobby Gallery rotates every few months; architect Yuki Horikoshi's drawings hang there until 30 November 2026, free to view and available to buy through 3331.

Wallpaper* noted the details that set the tone when the ten-storey hotel opened: an angular concrete check-in desk, curved wooden lounge furniture with orange textiles by Stellar Works, cut-glass tumblers from Kimoto Glassware and room key cards designed by Kyo-gen, a family studio specialising in traditional crests. Kyo-gen also makes the hotel's original T-shirt. In June 2026 the hotel announced a Tripadvisor Travelers' Choice Award, which goes to the top 10 percent of listings on the site.

From 18-Square-Metre Queens to a Tenth-Floor Suite

There are nine room types. The entry Queen is 18 m² with a 160 by 200 cm bed, the King is 20 m² and the Superior King 23 m². Both 26 m² Deluxe Kings, one on the corner, add a Nespresso machine, and the standard Deluxe King has an extra-wide 210 cm bed that can take a paid extra bed for a third guest. Every room has a 43-inch TV that streams your own accounts, a Bluetooth speaker, a rain shower and free Wi-Fi, and all are non-smoking.

Skip the Twin, Shower Only if a long soak matters to you, because it trades the bathtub for a booth; the regular 24 to 26 m² Twin is the safer pick. The 36 m² Deluxe Twin has a sofa corner, and the 64 m² NOHGA Suite brings a living room, kitchenette, microwave, wine cellar and 49-inch TV for up to four guests. The hotel also uses its 10th-floor suite for workshops and seminars with its neighbours, which tells you how seriously it takes the craft theme.

Sleep is handled by an airweave mattress and pillows from ATMOSPHERE JAPON, which also makes the original room wear. Bath products are by OSAJI, and the tissue box, hangers, shoe horn, clothing brush and Do Not Disturb card come from SyuRo, the design studio in eastern Tokyo. The 20 m² gym holds a Technogym treadmill, rower and dumbbells up to 10 kg for guests over 18. A coin laundry is open 24 hours, ¥400 a wash, with a free microwave and ice machine beside it.

Gunji Miso at Breakfast, Kuroge Wagyu After Dark

Bistro NOHGA, on the ground floor, cooks French-based contemporary food from ingredients bought around Taito. Breakfast runs from 7 am to 10 am and costs ¥4,000 including tax for a salad and bread buffet plus one main. Choose the Japanese set, limited to 40 servings a day, for rice from Inaricho Aizawa Kometen, miso and pickles from Gunji Miso, tsukudani from Funato Shoten and dashi from Iseoto. The brioche French toast comes with bacon smoked by Ohta's Ham in Iriya.

The open kitchen faces a Live Counter, the best seats for watching the chef cook. Lunch, from 11:30 am to 2 pm, is a four-course menu for ¥4,980 or five courses for ¥5,980. The autumn 2026 Seasonal Tasting Dinner Course is ¥7,900, with paté en croute of pork and foie gras and a Hanamaki guinea fowl ballottine. On the a la carte menu, roast Kuroge wagyu sirloin with miso and spiced nuts costs ¥5,900 for 120 g, and dinner adds a 10% service charge.

Drinks lean local too. Coffee is an original blend from Kabuki in Kuramae, roasted and blended to suit different times of day. In 2026 the bistro and the Kuramae distillery Ethical Spirits released a gin that upcycles pulp left from the kitchen's house-made ginger syrup, and Bistro MYOHGA, the gin with myoga syrup, is ¥1,200. From 2 pm to 5:30 pm, Happy Hour 2026 pours 14 drinks, including draft beer, orange wine and a LAST gin soda, at ¥600 each.

Jazz Fridays, Silver Workshops and Café Hours Without Cake

Time your stay for a Friday if you can. UENO JAZZ NIGHT fills the bistro on selected Fridays with no music charge; on 23 and 30 October 2026 there are three 20-minute sets at 7 pm, 8 pm and 9 pm. On 21 and 28 November 2026, a master silversmith from Nisshin Kikinzoku leads a Tokyo Silverware workshop in the second-floor Library Lounge, where you make a bookmark, bangle or ice cream spoon, starting at ¥11,800 per person, for between four and eight people.

Plan meals around the bistro's calendar. From October 2026 to March 2027, café hours from 2 pm to 6 pm serve drinks only, with no desserts or food, and on the published closing days the restaurant opens for breakfast only. The seasonal afternoon tea, from ¥6,650 per person with three hours of free-flow tea and coffee, is limited to 10 sets a day and needs an advance booking. On 27 September 2026 the bistro closed for a private event from 3 pm, so watch the hotel's news page.

Two softer perks are worth knowing. The first-floor terrace is dog-friendly, so you can sit outside with your dog after calling the bistro on +81-3-6284-2417 to ask about space. The Anniversary plan dresses the room with balloons and towel art, leaves a half bottle of champagne in the fridge and pushes check-out to noon. For longer trips, the hotel sells a discounted rate for stays of three consecutive nights or more, with or without meals.

Tokyobikes to Kuramae Coffee and Torigoe Miso

The front desk rents tokyobikes in two models, the eight-speed 26 and the basket-fitted BISOU 26, at ¥1,000 for two hours or ¥2,500 for a same-day return, and only the day plan includes free drinks. Ride 6 minutes to Kabuki at 1-12-12 Misuji, the coffee and chocolate shop that roasts the hotel's blend. It opened in November 2016 with only a small nameplate outside, serves coffee and chocolate pairings upstairs, opens from 11 am to 8:30 pm and closes on Tuesdays.

Keep pedalling to Gunji Miso at 1-14-2 Torigoe, about 7 minutes from the hotel by bike. Haruo Gunji founded the shop in 1957, and it still ferments its miso naturally through the seasons; the brown-rice miso made with Koshihikari koji is its best seller, alongside skin-on bettarazuke daikon. It is the same miso you taste at breakfast. The shop opens from 9 am to 7 pm and closes on Sundays, national holidays and the second and fourth Mondays.

If the hotel is full, Plan B is its sister NOHGA HOTEL AKIHABARA TOKYO at 3-10-11 Sotokanda, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo 101-0021, a 5-minute walk from Suehirocho Exit 3 on the Ginza line. It swaps craft for music, with quality speakers in every room, high-end speakers from five audio makers in the Deluxe Twin, and live DJs in the lounge every Thursday to Sunday in 2026. Book it under its own name and number, +81-3-6206-0569, as it is a separate property.
