Artisan Bakery Near Me in Kuhonbutsu: Comme'N Tokyo, a World Champion's Bakery

Comme'N TOKYO, opened in 2020 by Mondial du Pain 2019 champion chef Osawa, bakes at 7-18-5 Okusawa, Setagaya, one minute from Kuhonbutsu Station, daily 7:00 to 18:00.

Comme'N TOKYO opens every day of the year from 7:00 to 18:00 at 7-18-5 Okusawa, 1F, Setagaya-ku, Tokyo 158-0083, a one-minute walk from Kuhonbutsu Station on the Tokyu Oimachi Line. Its strawberry bread costs ¥800 and a smaller Petit Strawberry ¥400, tax included, and the shop is the home base of a chef who won the Mondial du Pain in 2019. If you are looking for an artisan bakery near me in Setagaya, this is the bakery people take the slow local train to reach.

Plan My Kuhonbutsu Bake Run

From a Prefab Hut to Kuhonbutsu

Comme'N's story starts in Gunma. Gendai Business reported in May 2024 that chef Osawa won three of six categories at the Mondial du Pain 2019 and became the first Japanese baker to take the overall title, while running his bakery from a prefabricated hut built on a car park in his home town of Takasaki. The following year he opened Comme'N TOKYO in Kuhonbutsu.

Tabelog records the opening date as 19 August 2020 and notes that the shop moved from its Takasaki address. The business has grown since: according to the same Gendai article, Comme'N GLUTEN FREE opened nearby in May 2022, a meringue counter was added inside the main store in July 2023, and a branch opened at Azabudai Hills in March 2024. The operating company, Ori, was established in December 2019 and lists 25 full-time staff and about 100 part-timers.

The Show Must Go On

The homepage carries the line "The Show must go on" and a short statement in Japanese: every bread is baked with sincerity, without special ingredients or expensive machines, and what matters is that you can see the face of the person who made it. An English tagline sums it up as nothing special, just honesty in creation.

The About page describes the main store as a place where everyday life and the extraordinary overlap, with the bustle of a market and the chance of unexpected conversations. A large log stands in the shop as its symbol, which the bakery compares to the soul of a single tree holding up the bread and the space.

The Breads to Know

The official menu page lists dozens of items, including an A.O.P butter croissant, a baguette à la main shaped by hand, a baked curry bread and the sakura and sake bread. That last one is the chef's competition piece: Gendai described it as a loaf he devised for the world championship, and quoted ¥972 for a whole loaf and ¥486 for a half at the Azabudai shop in 2024.

Newer breads arrive with the seasons. From 1 June 2026, the strawberry bread, made with the liquid from strawberry jam worked into the dough and topped with raspberries, has been on sale year-round at ¥800, alongside the ¥400 Petit Strawberry, according to the travel site Have a Good Holiday. A houjicha Petit Toeu with yuzu and black soybeans was sold for ¥980 from June to late July.

A Collaboration Until 31 October

This autumn there is a collaboration with INFINI, a patisserie also based in Kuhonbutsu and run by chef Fumiyuki Kanai. Have a Good Holiday reported in July 2026 that the oeuf bâton gift box, priced at ¥3,500 including tax, is sold from 1 August to 31 October 2026 at Comme'N TOKYO and Comme'N STAND.

If you are visiting in the last days of October, ask for it at the counter before it disappears. It is one of the few Comme'N items designed to be carried home as a gift rather than eaten on the walk back to the station.

Takeaway Only, No Reservations

There is nowhere to sit at the main store. Tabelog lists it as takeaway only and reservations as not accepted, and it records cards and QR payments such as PayPay, d Barai, Rakuten Pay and au PAY as accepted. That makes it a quick stop rather than a cafe visit.

For bread with a seat and coffee, the company runs Comme'N STAND at 6-13-7 Okusawa, described on the About page as the place to taste bread fresh from the oven with freshly brewed coffee, dips and desserts. Comme'N GLUTEN FREE at 7-19-12 Okusawa was born from the voice of a staff member with a wheat allergy, and both shops keep the same 7:00 to 18:00 daily hours. Gendai noted a constant queue at the Azabudai branch, so arriving close to opening is the safe plan at any of them.

Kuhonbutsu Temple and the Walk to Jiyugaoka

Kuhonbutsu Station takes its name from Kuhonbutsu Joshinji, the temple at the centre of this green, quiet neighbourhood, according to Tokyu's own area guide. The temple grounds are a short walk from the bakery and make a calm place to finish a pastry.

The company lists Jiyugaoka Station about ten minutes away on foot, while Tabelog estimates fifteen, so it is easy to arrive by the Oimachi Line and leave from Jiyugaoka on the Toyoko Line. Along the way, residential streets with small shops connect the two stations, and INFINI is in the same neighbourhood for anyone who wants a cake as well.

Families can add one more stop. Comme'N KIDS, inside Azabudai Hills Garden Plaza C at 1-2-4 Azabudai, Minato-ku, is described as a bakery where children are the main characters: they walk through a cave-like passage into a world surrounded by wheat fields, and the shelves include breads the chef loved as a child. It opens daily from 10:00 to 17:00.
