The practical evening in this city runs from about five to eleven. Most restaurant kitchens stop between nine and ten. Bars serve until 2 a.m. by state law but many neighbourhood ones close earlier on weeknights. Live music starts between eight and nine and is over by midnight. Museums with evening hours run one late night a week each rather than nightly. If you are deciding at seven, you have plenty of time. If you are deciding at nine-thirty, you are choosing between bars, late food and a walk.
The reliable no-booking options
Live music is the strongest last-minute category in San Francisco. The city has a dense small-venue circuit — the Mission, the Fillmore, North Beach, SoMa, the Haight — and door tickets on a weeknight are usually available. Comedy rooms above bars run most nights for a small cover. Repertory and independent cinemas programme nightly and rarely sell out midweek. And the trivia, karaoke and games-night circuit in neighbourhood bars is a whole social calendar that requires nothing but turning up.
The free evening
Several of the best things to do in San Francisco at night cost nothing. Walk the Embarcadero from the Ferry Building north as the fog comes in. Climb one of the stairway routes — the Filbert Steps, the Lyon Street steps, the 16th Avenue tiled steps — for a view of the city at dusk. Sit at the top of Bernal Hill or Corona Heights, both of which are ten minutes from a bus and give you the whole basin. Several museums run free evenings on a set day of the month, which is worth checking against the date.
Choosing by neighbourhood
If you want density and the option to change your mind, the Mission gives you the most within walking distance: bars, music, cinema, taquerias open late. North Beach is the best walkable combination of dinner, live music and a late slice. Hayes Valley works if you want a show at one of the Civic Center venues with dinner beforehand. The Sunset and the Richmond are quieter and better for a low-key evening — a neighbourhood bar, a cheap dinner and a walk to the beach if the fog is not in.
Practical notes
Check Muni before you plan the route home; the Owl network runs all night on major corridors but the regular lines thin out after midnight. Take a warm layer regardless of the daytime temperature, because the drop after sunset here is steeper than it looks. Weeknight door tickets are usually fine but weekend shows sell out. Kitchens close earlier than the venue does, so eat before rather than after. And if the fog is in hard, pick an indoor plan — a view night in this city is not something you can force.
If the fog decides for you
Fog is a scheduling input in San Francisco, not just weather. On a heavy evening the waterfront and the western half of the city become cold and viewless, while the Mission, Bernal, Potrero and the Excelsior frequently stay clear — the fog rolls through the gate and over the western hills before it reaches the eastern side.
So the practical rule for an unplanned night: if it is grey and blowing where you are, move east and inland rather than toward the water, and pick an indoor plan with a short walk between stops.

That means you can commit to a neighbourhood rather than a venue, arrive, and decide there — which is a much better strategy here than in a city where a wrong choice costs you an hour of driving.
