There are several Taco Bells in and around Times Square and they keep dramatically different hours, which is how people end up standing outside a dark one at two in the morning. The Cantina at 1501 Broadway is the one that matters for late nights: seven in the morning until four the following morning midweek, and until five on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

Three locations, three completely different schedules
The Broadway Cantina at 1501 runs seven in the morning to four at night from Monday to Wednesday, extends to five from Thursday through Saturday, and returns to a four o'clock close on Sunday. The Cantina at 500 Eighth Avenue keeps its own pattern, running to five in the morning on weekdays and staying open around the clock on Saturday.
And then there is the Cantina at 840 Eighth Avenue, which operates between half past ten in the morning and ten at night. That is a normal restaurant schedule, and turning up there at one in the morning because you searched for a Times Square Cantina is a specific and avoidable disappointment. Check the address, not just the brand.
The Cantina format actually serves alcohol
This is what separates a Cantina from an ordinary Taco Bell. Anyone twenty-one or over can order beer, wine and sangria alongside the regular menu, plus the chain's Twisted Freezes — the frozen drinks, including the Baja Blast slush, with a spirit added. The alcohol is not an afterthought bolted on; it is the reason the format exists.
In Times Square specifically, that combination is genuinely useful. It is one of a small number of rooms in the immediate theatre district where you can sit down, get a drink and eat something at one in the morning without a queue, a cover charge or a two-drink minimum. The bar is low and it is met.
Why the theatre district needs this
Broadway curtains come down between about ten and half past, and several thousand people walk out onto the same four blocks simultaneously. The restaurants around them are either shutting their kitchens or running a wait, and the ones still fully open are largely priced for the captive audience.
A Cantina that runs to four or five in the morning solves a very specific problem for a very specific crowd — theatre staff coming off shift, people who went for a drink after the show and are now hungry, and anyone whose night simply ran longer than the neighbourhood's kitchens did. It is not a destination. It is infrastructure.
Ordering, and the digital-only wrinkle
Taco Bell has pushed digital ordering hard in its Times Square Cantina format, and depending on which location you are in, kiosk or app ordering may be the primary route rather than a counter. That speeds things up considerably at two in the morning when the room is full, but it catches out anyone expecting to walk up and talk to a person.
Order on the app before you walk over if you can. In a room this busy at peak, the difference between arriving with an order already placed and arriving to join a kiosk queue is ten or fifteen minutes, and at that hour those minutes are worth more than they are at lunchtime.
What to actually get late
The menu is the standard one — Crunchwrap Supreme, Mexican Pizza, the taco and burrito range — plus the Cantina drinks. Late at night the practical consideration is portability: if you are eating in the room, anything works, but if you are walking to a train, the wrapped items travel and the nachos genuinely do not.
A Twisted Freeze is a slushie with a spirit in it and it drinks much faster than it looks like it will. If you have already been out, treat it as the drink it is rather than as a soft drink with a novelty attached, and note that the room stops serving alcohol well before it stops serving food.
Getting there and getting home
Fifteen oh one Broadway sits at the southern end of Times Square near 43rd Street, which puts you within a couple of minutes of the Times Square–42nd Street complex serving the 1, 2, 3, 7, N, Q, R, W and S lines. The Eighth Avenue locations are similarly close to the A, C and E at 42nd Street.
That transit density is the practical argument for eating here rather than somewhere further out. At four in the morning the subway is running on a night schedule with long gaps, and being a two-minute walk from a major interchange is worth considerably more than a marginally better meal fifteen blocks away.
