The confusion is understandable — Wynwood is where the late-night crowd is, and the Cantina format is designed for exactly that crowd, so the assumption is reasonable. It is just wrong. If you are in Wynwood and you want Taco Bell, you are looking at a standard location or a drive; the Cantina experience is on the beach.
Twenty-four hours means twenty-four hours
The Washington Avenue location runs around the clock, Monday through Sunday. That is a genuinely rare thing even on Miami Beach, where a lot of places that describe themselves as late-night are actually shutting the kitchen at two while the bar keeps going. Here the counter is working at any hour you turn up.
That makes it structurally important to the neighbourhood in the same way an all-night pharmacy is. It is not where you plan to go. It is where you end up at half past four when the alternatives have run out, and it is reliable in a way that the more interesting options on this strip are not.
The Cantina difference
Cantina locations serve alcohol to anyone twenty-one or over — beer, wine and sangria, plus the Twisted Freezes, which are the chain's frozen drinks with vodka, tequila or rum added. That is what distinguishes a Cantina from a standard restaurant and it is why the format clusters in nightlife districts.
On Washington Avenue, in the middle of one of the densest concentrations of bars and clubs in the country, that positioning is deliberate. It is worth knowing that alcohol service does not run the full twenty-four hours even where the food does — Florida licensing sets its own limits, and the freezes stop before the tacos do.
Where it sits on the beach
Sixteen twenty-four Washington Avenue puts you a block from Lincoln Road, in the middle of South Beach rather than at either end. That is close to the Lincoln Road Mall, walkable to Ocean Drive, and within reach of most of the hotels between Fifth Street and Twentieth.
Walking is correct here. Parking on Washington Avenue at night is difficult and expensive, and the streets around Lincoln Road are largely pedestrianised anyway. If you are anywhere in the core of South Beach you are within a fifteen-minute walk, and at three in the morning that walk is more pleasant than the alternative.
How to use it well
This is a fill-in rather than a destination, and treating it as one avoids disappointment. The value of a twenty-four hour counter is that it removes a problem — you do not have to end the night early because everything closed, and you do not have to accept whatever overpriced thing is still serving on Ocean Drive.
Order on the app before you walk if the room looks busy from outside. Weekend nights between two and four are the peak here by a wide margin, and the queue at that hour moves at the speed of the people in it rather than the speed of the kitchen.
What the room is like at four in the morning
It is bright, it is loud, and it is full of people who have been somewhere else first. That is the honest description and it is also the appeal — there is no pretence here about what the room is for, and nobody is judging what you order or what state you arrived in. The staff on that shift have seen considerably worse than whatever you are bringing.
Seating is functional rather than comfortable, and at peak it fills, so a lot of people order and walk. If you want to sit, the window between about four thirty and six in the morning is when the room genuinely empties out, and it is one of the stranger and quieter hours to be awake on Washington Avenue.
And if you are actually in Wynwood
Wynwood has its own late-night infrastructure and it is genuinely better than a chain counter — kitchens on Second Avenue run to two or three in the morning at the end of the week, and the taco options in the district are considerably more interesting than a Crunchwrap.
So the honest advice is not to drive to Miami Beach for this. If you are on the beach already and it is four in the morning, the Washington Avenue Cantina is a genuinely good answer. If you are in Wynwood, stay in Wynwood. The causeway is not worth it.
