Scenic Walking Trail Near Me: Golden Gate Promenade Along Crissy Field
The Golden Gate Promenade is a free, flat 4.3-mile bayfront walk from the Marina Gate past Crissy Marsh to Fort Point, with Golden Gate Bridge views throughout.
For a lot of San Franciscans, scenic walking trail near me means one thing: the flat, sandy, wind-in-your-face stretch along Crissy Field with the Golden Gate Bridge growing bigger with every step. Officially it is the Golden Gate Promenade, the northern part of the regional Bay Trail in San Francisco, and it runs 4.3 miles from the Marina Gate to Fort Point beneath the bridge. The Presidio Trust rates it easy, it is free, and there is not a single serious hill on it, which makes it the rare classic walk that suits toddlers, grandparents and marathon trainees alike.

From Army Airfield to Shoreline Park
Crissy Field was once a busy airfield and transportation hub for the US Army. Planes landed on the flat ground along the bay, and the shoreline was filled and developed to serve them. After the Army left, the land was restored, and the Trust now describes Crissy Field as 100 acres of adventure, with dunes replanted in coastal scrub and the old fill turned back into beach and marsh.
The centerpiece of that restoration is Crissy Marsh, which debuted in 2001. It sits between the Presidio's largest watershed and the salt water of the bay, and the Trust counts more than 100 bird species that have used this roughly 20-acre wetland. Crissy Field north of Mason Street, including the promenade, is managed by the National Park Service as part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
Walking East to West
The classic direction is east to west, so the bridge stays in front of you the whole way. Start at the Marina Gate or at Crissy Field East Beach, where there is free parking. The first stretch passes the beach and Crissy Marsh, with a boardwalk over the wetland if you want a closer look at the birds. The path surface is a mix of dirt and paved sections, wide enough for walkers, runners, strollers and cyclists to share.
Halfway along, the marsh gives way to open lawn and dunes, and the bridge towers start to dominate the skyline. The Trust estimates the full walk at about ninety minutes one way. Many people turn around at the Warming Hut near the western end, but the extra few minutes to Fort Point are worth it for the view straight up at the underside of the bridge deck.
Crissy Marsh in Autumn
October and November bring migrating birds down the Pacific Flyway, and the marsh is one of the best places in the city to see them without leaving pavement. At low tide the mudflats fill with shorebirds probing the mud, while egrets and herons stalk the channels. Out on the open water, pelicans often work the swells just off the beach.
Bring binoculars, and if you can, time your walk for the hour after low tide when the birds are most active. The light in autumn comes in low from the south and west, so the marsh glows in the late afternoon and the bridge turns a deeper orange against the sky.
Beaches, Picnics and the Outpost Playground
You can picnic at either end. Crissy Field East Beach has tables and space to spread out with a view across to Alcatraz, and the West Bluffs Picnic Area near the bridge has tables and grills. If you have children, the Trust suggests crossing over to the Outpost playground at Presidio Tunnel Tops, which it describes as San Francisco's biggest playground. Tunnel Tops itself is a landscaped park built over the Presidio Parkway tunnels, with lawns that look straight out over the field you just walked.
Fort Point at the Finish
Fort Point National Historic Site sits right beneath the southern end of the Golden Gate Bridge, a brick fortress that the bridge engineers famously chose to arch over rather than demolish. According to the Presidio Trust, construction began in 1853 at the height of the Gold Rush. The fort was later used in the Civil War and again in World War II, and it became a National Park Service site in 1970. Film fans know it from Alfred Hitchcock's 1958 Vertigo. Inside, exhibits in rooms such as the Sally Port and the Guard Room explain how the Third System fort was designed to guard the entrance to the bay. Standing beside its seawall you get waves breaking at your feet and the bridge roaring overhead, a fitting end to a walk that started at a quiet marina beach.
Food, Restrooms and Rules
The Trust lists restrooms at Crissy Field East Beach, at the Outpost playground and at the Warming Hut Park Store. For food, the Warming Hut and Presidio Pop Up are the options along the route. The beach is open to the elements, so bring layers. The wind off the Golden Gate is relentless on most afternoons, and fog can drop the temperature quickly. Cyclists share the path, so keep right and watch for bells, and keep an eye on children near the water, since the currents at the Golden Gate are strong.
Getting There
Muni's 30 Stockton stops at Mason Street and Halleck Street, a short walk to the marsh. At the west end, paid parking is available near the West Bluffs Picnic Area. Right beside the beach, the Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary Visitor Center at 991 Marine Drive is worth a quick stop to learn about the wildlife in the waters just outside the Golden Gate.
