The evening-of problem is a specific one. You are not planning a weekend, you are standing somewhere at seven o'clock with a free night and no bookings, and every calendar you check is full of things that required buying a ticket in advance. What you need is a neighbourhood with a high density of walk-in options that are still good on no notice. In San Francisco that is North Beach, and it has been true for about seventy years.

Start by eating, because it gets harder later
The neighbourhood's restaurants mostly take walk-ins on a weeknight and the older Italian rooms will usually seat two people without a booking at any reasonable hour. If they are full, Chinatown begins three minutes' walk south and solves the problem completely, with a large number of kitchens that seat immediately and stay open later than the rest of the neighbourhood.
For something faster there are slice counters, focaccia if it is early enough in the day, and deli sandwiches. The move if you are eating alone is to sit at a bar rather than take a table — you will be served faster and it is a better hour.
Comedy, music and the things that sell tickets at the door
North Beach has a long-standing comedy club and a music venue that has been operating since the 1930s, and both frequently have tickets available on the night for midweek shows. The rule is to check the venue's own page rather than a resale site and then, if it says sold out, to turn up at the door anyway for a weeknight — releases and no-shows are common and the box office will tell you straight.
Below that tier there is the free layer: bars with a jazz trio in the corner, a pianist, an open mic, a jam night. No cover, a drink minimum in practice if not in policy, and standards of playing that would surprise anyone who assumes free means amateur. Walking two blocks and reading the doors will find these faster than any app.
The bookshop, which counts as an evening
The famous bookshop here stays open late and is genuinely a place to spend an hour rather than five minutes. Upstairs, downstairs, poetry in its own room, and no expectation that you buy anything. On a night when you cannot face a crowd it is the best available option in the neighbourhood, and it is directly next door to one of the city's oldest bars, which makes the sequence obvious.
The bar culture here rewards wandering. Literary bars, dive bars, a couple of proper old cocktail rooms, and enough of them within four blocks that you can move three times in an evening without walking more than a few hundred metres.
Outside, after dark
The square is open all night and is a pleasant place to sit with a coffee. The hill above the neighbourhood, with the tower on top, is worth the climb after dark for the view — the tower itself closes in the evening but the road and the surrounding terrace stay accessible, and the city from up there at ten o'clock is one of the better free things in San Francisco. The garden staircases down the eastern side are lit and are a lovely descent, though steep.
There are also public bocce courts at the playground on the neighbourhood's edge, floodlit into the evening, and on many nights they are free to use. It is an odd thing to do on the spur of the moment and it is a genuinely good hour.
Getting there and away
Do not drive. Parking here is bad in daylight and worse at night, and the neighbourhood is a short walk or bus ride from downtown and the waterfront. Rail stops in the small hours, so if you are staying out past midnight, check the night bus routes before the second drink — they exist and they are infrequent.
The compensating advantage is that everything in the neighbourhood is within a ten-minute walk of everything else, so a three-stop night here involves less travelling than a two-stop night almost anywhere else in San Francisco.
A tonight plan, decided at seven
Eat at a walk-in table by eight, try the door at the comedy club or the music venue at nine, and if that fails, spend the hour in the bookshop instead and finish at a no-cover bar with whoever is playing. Total planning required: none. Total cost: a dinner and two drinks. That is what this neighbourhood is for, and it is why people who have lived here for decades still default to it on a night with no plan.
