There are two quite different places to sit here, they produce two quite different evenings, and only one of them involves the film. The choice is not a formality — the restaurant takes courtyard requests into consideration and guarantees none of them, so turning up assuming you will be outside is how people end up disappointed in a room that is genuinely lovely. The courtyard: heaters, string lights, and a film from dusk
You reach it down a red-carpeted corridor to the host stand, and it opens into a partially covered outdoor courtyard with string lights overhead and powerful heaters running. The film starts at dusk, projected onto the wall.
Partially covered is the operative phrase. It works in San Francisco weather because of the heaters rather than in spite of it, and the covered portion is the part to ask for if there is any chance of rain.
The film is silent from the diner's point of view — it plays against the wall while you eat rather than commanding the room. That is either charming or beside the point, depending on your table, and the seats facing the wall are the ones that make it worth having.
The dining room: fireplace, open kitchen, and no film
Inside there is a large fireplace and an open kitchen in a high industrial room. It is warm, it is quieter than the courtyard, and it is where a conversation actually works.
This is the better room in winter and the better room for a table that came for dinner rather than for the concept. Nobody who eats inside here comes away feeling they got the lesser option; they come away having had a very good dinner in a handsome room.
It is also the room you are most likely to be given. If the courtyard matters enormously to you, the honest advice is to plan around the possibility that you will be inside.
How to actually get the courtyard
Reservations can be made for either space and the restaurant takes courtyard requests into consideration, but none are guaranteed. That is their stated position and it is worth taking literally rather than as a hedge.
Book early, request it in the reservation notes, and ask again politely when you arrive. Early seatings are more likely to accommodate a specific request than a full 8pm service on a Saturday.
If you want the film specifically, remember it starts at dusk. A 5:30pm summer booking in the courtyard means you finish before anything is projected, which is the most common way to get outside and still miss the point.
Brunch is a different building entirely
During the day sunlight floods the courtyard and it becomes a bright, breezy patio rather than an evening set. Brunch here has its own reputation, quite separate from dinner.
The croque madame is famously oversized, the crispy potatoes have a following, and the house-made Pop Tarts are the item people mention afterwards. It is an unusually good brunch in a city with a great deal of competition.
Book brunch early too, and often — it is as contested as dinner and the courtyard at midday is the version of this restaurant most people would choose if they could choose.
Where it sits
2534 Mission Street, in the Mission, on a stretch that is busy, loud and completely unlike the room behind the door. The contrast between the street and the courtyard is part of what the restaurant is doing.
The 24th Street Mission BART station is a short walk and the surrounding blocks have as much to do afterwards as anywhere in San Francisco. There is no good reason to drive.
Bring a layer regardless of which room you booked. San Francisco evenings and a partially covered courtyard are exactly the combination that catches visitors out, heaters or not.
