Dinner Near Me in SF: Angler Cooks on a 32-Foot Hearth

A waterfront restaurant window looking out over a bay at dusk

Angler sits on the Embarcadero with the bay on one side and, on the other, a thirty-two-foot wood-burning hearth running the length of the room. Almost everything the kitchen serves is cooked on it. That is not a stylistic flourish — it is the operating constraint that determines what is on the menu, why the sourcing is what it is, and why the room is arranged so that the fire is the thing you look at rather than the water. Joshua Skenes built the restaurant around the hearth and the menu follows from it.

One enormous fire, a short week of service, and a room where the seat you get decides the evening. Ask Karpo when to book and where to ask to sit.

What cooking everything on fire actually forces

A hearth is not a range. There are no dials, no even temperatures and no ability to hold something at a precise point for twenty minutes. Everything is managed by distance from the coals and by the attention of whoever is standing there.

That means the menu has to be built from ingredients that improve under those conditions — whole fish, large cuts, vegetables that can take char, things with skin and bone and fat. It also means the kitchen cannot carry a dish that requires precision it cannot deliver.

The sourcing follows. Cooking this way exposes an ingredient completely, so the restaurant works with a small group of local purveyors and the quality is visible rather than concealed by technique.

The practical guidance for ordering: choose the thing that most obviously wants fire. A whole fish here is a considerably better decision than anything that could have been made on a stove.

Where to sit, and why it matters more than usual

The hearth is in full view. Seats facing it are the best in the restaurant and the reason to specify a preference when booking rather than taking what you are given.

The alternative is the bay view, which is genuinely lovely at dusk and is what most people request. Choosing between the fire and the water is the real decision here.

The honest recommendation: fire at night, water at the early seating. At five in the evening the bay is doing something; at nine it is a dark shape and the hearth is the show.

The bar is a serious proposition in its own right — the restaurant took a Michelin award for its cocktails — and sitting there is a legitimate way to eat a shortened version of the meal.

There is a further consequence of the design that is easy to miss until you are sitting there: the hearth is the heating, the lighting and the soundtrack. A room built around thirty-two feet of open fire does not need much else, and the restaurant does not add much else.

That gives the space an unusual quality for a restaurant at this price — it is dark, warm and slightly primitive rather than polished, and the theatre is entirely functional. Nothing is happening for your benefit; you are simply watching people cook.

It also means the room smells of woodsmoke throughout, which is either the best thing about it or a reason to sit further away, depending on the person.

The schedule, including the week it shuts

Service runs Tuesday to Saturday from 5:00pm to 10:00pm. Sunday and Monday are dark.

The restaurant also takes an annual closure at the start of January — in 2026 it ran from the 1st to the 7th, reopening on the 8th — for maintenance, development and staff rest. Anyone planning a New Year visit should check.

A five-day week and a five-hour service is a short trading window for a restaurant of this size, which concentrates demand. Book ahead rather than assuming a Tuesday will be quiet.

The five o'clock start is the underused end. An early table here is a genuinely different and calmer experience, with the fire being built up rather than run flat out.

The price, and what it is buying

This is an expensive restaurant, and it is worth being clear about where the money goes. Cooking whole ingredients over wood is slow, wasteful and labour-intensive, and it requires buying at a quality level where nothing can hide.

The bill will be higher than the number of dishes suggests, particularly if you order fish by weight. Asking the price of a whole fish before agreeing to it is normal and expected.

The bar route is the cost-controlled version. Two or three dishes at the counter with a cocktail is a real visit at a fraction of the full-table cost.

If you want one thing that justifies the trip on its own, it is whatever whole fish is on that night.

The Embarcadero around it

The restaurant is on the waterfront stretch between the Ferry Building and the bridge, on the flat promenade that runs the northern shoreline.

That makes the pre-dinner walk easy and worthwhile. The Ferry Building is a few minutes south and the waterfront at dusk is one of the better free things in the city.

Transit is excellent — the Embarcadero station and the F line streetcars both stop within a short walk — and parking here is expensive garage parking.

Afterwards, the walk back along the water toward the Ferry Building at ten at night is well-lit, quiet and considerably better than getting straight into a car.

Practical notes

Angler is on the Embarcadero in San Francisco. Open Tuesday to Saturday, 5:00pm to 10:00pm; closed Sunday and Monday.

Reservations are taken online and are worth making well ahead for weekend evenings.

Specify hearth-side or bay-side when you book. Both are good and they are different restaurants.
