Most clubs buy a sound system to fill a room they already have. Audio, on 11th Street in SoMa, is closer to the opposite: a four-hundred-capacity room built around a Funktion One rig that includes what is credited as the world's first 3D surround setup and a pair of rare thirty-two-inch subwoofers. That is an unusual set of priorities for a venue this size, and it produces an unusual night out — one where the reason to go is not the guest list or the room or the view, but the specific physical experience of hearing dance music properly. If you have only ever heard techno through a competent PA, this is a different thing.

What the system actually is
The rig is Funktion One, which is the reference name in club audio, and the installation here goes beyond a standard specification: a 3D surround configuration credited as the first of its kind, plus thirty-two-inch subwoofers that are genuinely rare in a room of this size.
A thirty-two-inch driver moves an enormous amount of air. In practice that means the bass is not louder so much as physically different — it arrives in your chest rather than your ears, and it stays defined instead of turning into a rumble.
The surround element is the part that surprises people. Sound is placed around the room rather than thrown at you from the front, which changes where you want to stand: the middle of the floor is genuinely the best seat rather than simply the most crowded.
Four hundred people is the point
Capacity is around 400, with a combined figure of roughly 650 when the downstairs restaurant Bergerac is counted. Four hundred is small for a club with this level of installed audio, and that ratio is the whole proposition.
Small room plus serious system means you are never far from the booth and never far from a speaker. There is no bad part of the floor and there is no part of the floor where you cannot hear the detail.
It also means it sells out. A four-hundred-capacity room booking internationally touring DJs does not have room for people who decided at eleven o'clock, so buy ahead.
The programming is underground rather than mainstream
The calendar runs house and techno and their adjacent genres, with a mix of touring names and local residents. Recent and upcoming bookings have included artists like Detlef, Slushii and Matt Sassari, which gives a fair sense of the register.
This is not a bottle-service room with a DJ in the corner. The crowd is there for the music, which changes the atmosphere on the floor in a way that is immediately obvious.
Check the specific night. As with any club that books across a genre, a Friday and a Saturday here can attract quite different crowds and quite different volumes of people.
Practical things about the building
It is at 316 11th Street, in the 11th and Folsom cluster in SoMa where several of the city's clubs sit within a couple of blocks of each other. That concentration is useful — if the night is not what you hoped, alternatives are a two-minute walk away.
Bergerac downstairs means there is somewhere to eat and start the evening in the same building, which is more than most clubs in this district offer.
Bring earplugs. That is not a joke about a loud club: with a system of this quality, decent earplugs preserve the detail while dropping the level, and they are what the people who come here every week are wearing.
Getting there and home
The 11th Street corridor is walkable from Downtown and Mid-Market and a short ride from the Mission. Civic Center and Powell BART stations are both within reasonable walking distance early in the evening.
Late at night, this is one of the easier club districts in San Francisco to leave, precisely because several venues empty onto the same few blocks and cars circulate accordingly.
Parking exists on the surrounding streets and is not worth the trouble on a weekend night.
