Ernest is listed at 1890 Bryant Street in San Francisco's Mission, and if you walk to 1890 Bryant Street you will find a wall. The entrance is a gate on the corner of Florida and Mariposa, two streets over, and this is the single most useful piece of information about the restaurant — more useful than anything a best restaurants near me listing will tell you, and the thing that makes people late for their own booking.

The address and the door are different things
This is a converted industrial building in a part of the Mission that is still genuinely industrial — warehouses, workshops, roll-up doors, and very little indication from the street of what is inside any of them. Navigate to the corner of Florida and Mariposa rather than to the Bryant Street number.
Allow an extra ten minutes the first time. The block is dark, the signage is minimal by design, and circling it in a car at 5:25 for a 5:30 booking is a bad way to start an expensive dinner.
Five nights, and the week starts on Wednesday
Monday and Tuesday are closed. Wednesday and Thursday run 5:30pm to 9:30pm; Friday through Sunday open half an hour earlier at 5pm and close at the same time. Sunday dinner is a genuine option here, which it is not at most restaurants of this kind.
The Sunday service is the underused one. Same kitchen, considerably easier booking, and the Mission is quieter on a Sunday evening than at any other point in the week.
The phone has office hours
This catches people out. The restaurant answers its phone between noon and 4pm, Wednesday through Sunday. Outside that window nobody picks up, because the staff are either not in yet or are running service. Online booking through OpenTable covers parties of up to six; anything larger needs that afternoon phone window.
So if you need to change something, do it in the early afternoon. Trying at ten in the morning or at seven in the evening will not work.
What chef Brandon Rice's kitchen is doing
The format is a chef's counter proposition with a menu that moves rather than a fixed carte, which means the right question on arrival is what is good tonight rather than what is the signature dish. Kitchens that rewrite frequently reward diners who ask.
Order across the menu rather than deep into one section, and let the counter guide the sequence if you are sitting there. That is what the format is for.
This part of the Mission
Bryant and Florida sit on the eastern edge of the Mission, between the residential streets to the west and the Potrero and Showplace Square industrial zone to the east. It is not a strolling neighbourhood after dark and there is no obvious cluster of bars to fall into afterwards.
The 16th Street Mission BART station is about fifteen minutes on foot and the bus network covers Bryant. If you want a drink afterwards, plan to walk west into the Mission proper rather than expecting to find one on this block.
