The most common late-night failure in Silver Lake is assuming that a bar being open means food is available. The neighbourhood's kitchens and its bars keep quite different hours — a room can be serving drinks until two and have stopped cooking at ten — and the gap between those two times is where a lot of evenings end with a petrol-station snack. Knowing which addresses are actually cooking after eleven is more useful here than knowing which are the best restaurants.
Last orders and closing time are different hours at almost every one of these, and the difference is often ninety minutes. Tell Karpo what time it is now and it will only show you kitchens that are still on.
The kitchens that run latest
Bacari Silverlake at 3626 Sunset Boulevard is the most useful address on this list. It is a Venetian-leaning small-plates room with a rotating list of small-production wines, and its hours run to 12.30am on Thursday, 1am on Friday and 1am on Saturday, opening at 4pm on the Saturday. Those are kitchen-inclusive hours in a small-plates format, which is exactly the sort of food that still works at midnight — nothing arrives so large that you regret it.
The Kitchen at 4348 Fountain Avenue runs 11am to midnight Monday through Friday and 10am to midnight on Saturday. A straight midnight close every single day is unusual and valuable precisely because it is predictable: you do not have to remember which night of the week it is.
The bar that has outlasted everything
The Silverlake Lounge at 2906 Sunset Boulevard has been in operation since 1938 and is the longest-standing of the neighbourhood's music venues. It runs as a neighbourhood bar and a late-night music room, with drag and burlesque among the programming. It is not the place to solve hunger, but it is the place that determines how late your night runs, and knowing it is there changes the shape of the evening.

The practical point is sequencing. Eat at a kitchen that is still open, then move to a room that is open later. Trying to do both at one address is what fails in this neighbourhood, because very few places here are genuinely good at both.
The rooms that change after dark
Josephine at 4156 Santa Monica Boulevard is a French restaurant in daylight and operates as a dark dive bar after sunset. That transition is the single most Silver Lake thing on this list, and it means the same address answers two completely different questions depending on when you arrive. Little Joy Cocktails runs a late happy hour from 10.30pm to close on Sunday through Thursday, alongside its everyday 4pm to 7pm one — a late happy hour is a rare thing and it is the reason a Tuesday night here can run longer than intended.
How to plan a late night that works
Three habits. First, eat earlier than feels necessary — around ten rather than around midnight — because the kitchens close before the rooms do and there is no reversing that decision at half past twelve. Second, choose small plates rather than a full dinner if you are eating late; Bacari's format exists for this reason. Third, check the specific night: these hours vary meaningfully between Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and Sunday to Wednesday is a genuinely different neighbourhood with a much shorter list.
It is also worth saying plainly that Silver Lake is not a late-night eating neighbourhood in the way Koreatown is, a few miles west, where kitchens run past midnight as a matter of course. If food after one in the morning is the actual requirement, the honest answer is to drive rather than to keep looking here.
Choosing
Genuinely hungry at half past eleven: Bacari, or The Kitchen if it is before midnight. Predictable and you cannot remember the day: The Kitchen. A drink and something to look at rather than a meal: the Silverlake Lounge. A Tuesday that is running long: Little Joy, after half past ten. Past one in the morning and it has to be a proper meal: leave the neighbourhood.
Practical notes
Addresses: Bacari Silverlake 3626 Sunset Blvd; The Kitchen 4348 Fountain Ave; The Silverlake Lounge 2906 Sunset Blvd; Josephine 4156 Santa Monica Blvd. Bacari runs 5pm–12.30am Thursday, 5pm–1am Friday and 4pm–1am Saturday. The Kitchen runs 11am–midnight Monday to Friday and 10am–midnight Saturday. The Silverlake Lounge has been open since 1938. Little Joy's late happy hour runs 10.30pm to close, Sunday to Thursday. Late-night street parking on Sunset is easier than at dinner time but the permit restrictions on the residential blocks behind it still apply overnight, and they are enforced.

Ask Karpo first
In Silver Lake the kitchen closes long before the door does, and the hours shift between Thursday, Friday and Saturday in ways no listing makes obvious. Ask Karpo what is still cooking right now near you, when last orders actually are, and whether tonight is a night worth driving west for instead.
