Los Feliz keeps its restaurants on two streets that run roughly a block apart and are not interchangeable. Hillhurst Avenue is the busier, brighter, more restaurant-dense one. Vermont Avenue is shorter, older in feel and holds the rooms with the most character. Getting this wrong is the standard mistake here: people park on one, find it fully booked, and never realise the other is ninety seconds away.

Hillhurst, and its anchor
Little Dom's at 2128 Hillhurst Avenue is the Italian-American room that has been busy since it opened, and it is the address most people mean when they say they are eating in Los Feliz. It is exactly what it looks like — red-sauce-adjacent cooking done properly, in a room designed to be full — and its popularity is the single biggest constraint on eating on this street.
Vermont Restaurant and Bar at 1929 Hillhurst Avenue is the more ambitious option on the same street, doing New American cooking under vaulted ceilings with soaring columns and huge picture windows. It is confusingly named for a restaurant on Hillhurst, which is worth knowing before you set off looking for it on the wrong street.
The one with the early happy hour
Encanto on Hillhurst is a relaunched wood-fired Baja coastal kitchen with spacious indoor and outdoor areas and a separate bar and lounge, running a happy hour from 3pm to 5.30pm daily.
A daily happy hour starting at three is the most practically useful fact on this page. It covers the dead stretch of the afternoon when Los Angeles kitchens are typically shut, and it means an early arrival in this neighbourhood has somewhere to be rather than an hour to fill.
Vermont, which is the better street to try first
Figaro Bistrot at 1802 North Vermont Avenue is perfectly French in a way that is now slightly rare — mirrored walls covered in gold lettering, chairs that are not quite comfortable, and no interest in updating either. It is one of the few rooms in this part of Los Angeles that would not look out of place transplanted to Paris.
The Dresden is on Vermont in the middle of Los Feliz and is split into two distinct halves: a main dining room and a bar and lounge. Those two halves function as different venues with different availability, and asking for the lounge when the dining room is full is a standard move that works far more often than people expect.
The strategy
Three things worth doing. Try Vermont before Hillhurst — it is shorter, quieter and holds the rooms that will still seat you at eight on a Friday when Hillhurst has nothing. Ask for the bar or lounge rather than a table, because several of these rooms keep those as separate first-come inventory. And treat 3pm to 5.30pm as a genuine option rather than a compromise, because Encanto's happy hour covers exactly the hours the rest of the neighbourhood does not.
The other advantage of Los Feliz is what surrounds it. Griffith Park sits directly to the north, which makes an early walk followed by a late-afternoon happy hour a natural pairing and one that avoids the neighbourhood's busiest dining hour entirely.
Choosing
The obvious, reliable, always-busy one: Little Dom's on Hillhurst, booked. Something genuinely French: Figaro Bistrot on Vermont. A room with two personalities and a decent chance of a seat: The Dresden. Arriving at four in the afternoon: Encanto, on the happy hour. A bigger, more designed dining room: Vermont Restaurant and Bar, on Hillhurst despite the name.
