Echo Park is small enough to eat your way through in a day and varied enough that the day does not get repetitive. It is also one of the few Los Angeles neighbourhoods where the whole sequence works on foot, with a lake in the middle to walk off the lunch. Here is the neighbourhood in order of the clock, which is a more useful way to plan than by cuisine.

Eight in the morning: bakery and coffee
Echo Park Avenue north of Sunset is the morning street. Coffee roasters and small bakeries open early, and the panaderías along Sunset and Alvarado are cheaper and, for conchas and pan dulce, better. Take whatever you buy to the lake, which is at its best before nine — still, cool, and full of birds rather than people.
For a hot breakfast the options are breakfast burritos from the taco counters, or one of the sit-down rooms doing eggs. Both are faster and cheaper than the equivalent on the Westside by a wide margin.
One in the afternoon: tacos, tortas and the counter lunch
Lunch here is a street-level proposition. Taco and torta counters on Sunset, pupusas toward the Westlake side, banh mi and noodle rooms scattered between them, and several of the dinner restaurants doing a shorter, cheaper midday menu. This is the meal to eat standing up or at a plastic table, and it is the best value in the neighbourhood.
Four in the afternoon: the lake, and something cold
Echo Park Lake is the neighbourhood's living room — a paved loop of about a mile around lotus beds, a fountain and a boathouse, with the downtown skyline framed behind the palms. Pedal boats run in the afternoon. The fruit carts along the path sell mango and cucumber with chile and lime, and the paletas are the correct move on a warm day. This is the interval that makes the whole plan work.
Eight in the evening: the small dining rooms
Dinner is where the neighbourhood's newer layer sits — twenty- to forty-seat rooms along Sunset with short menus, natural wine and open kitchens, plus older Italian and Mexican restaurants that have been there far longer. Walk-ins are realistic on weeknights and a gamble on Fridays; the counter seats are the way in either way.
Eleven and after: the late window
The eastside closes earlier than Koreatown or Downtown, but Echo Park has a genuine late seam: bars serving food on Sunset, a couple of taco operations that run past midnight, and the corner stores. If you want a proper late meal, the reliable move is fifteen minutes west into Koreatown, which is open when everything here is not.
Practical notes
Park once and walk the whole day; the neighbourhood is compact and the parking rules are strict on the residential streets. Check dark days for the dinner stops, which are usually Monday or Tuesday. Carry cash for the carts and counters. Bring a layer for the evening — Echo Park sits high enough that it cools off faster than the flats. And check the Dodgers schedule before you commit to the whole day, because a home game changes the traffic and the parking on every street in this article.
The version of this day without a car
The whole sequence works on Metro plus walking. Bus lines run along Sunset, Alvarado and Glendale, the rail station at the Downtown end is a short ride away, and the neighbourhood itself is compact enough to cross on foot in twenty minutes. Doing it without a car removes the parking problem entirely and makes the wine and dinner stops considerably more relaxing.
The one part that benefits from wheels is the morning bakery run, which is uphill on Echo Park Avenue. Start at the top and work down.
Compress it if you only have half a day. The strongest four hours are late morning to mid-afternoon: bakery, a walk round the lake, a taco lunch, and a coffee on Echo Park Avenue. That version needs no reservations, costs under thirty dollars a head, and works every day of the week including the Mondays when the dinner rooms are dark.
