Type "pizza near me" anywhere in San Francisco and the map fills with pins that all look equally plausible. Supply is not the problem. The problem is that this city's best pizza splits across four unrelated traditions, and the shop that solves a walk-home craving on Green Street is not the shop that solves a Tuesday dinner in the Outer Richmond. Below is where those lines actually fall, with the hours and the house rules that decide whether you get fed.
Tell Karpo the time and the neighborhood you're standing in, and you'll get the one pizzeria still firing — plus whether it's a waitlist, a walk-up window, or a table you can sit down at.
North Beach Is Still the Center of Gravity
Tony's Pizza Napoletana at 1570 Stockton Street has anchored the neighborhood since 2009. Tony Gemignani is a thirteen-time World Pizza Champion, and the kitchen is built to prove it: seven separate ovens running at seven different temperatures, turning out roughly a dozen distinct styles — Neapolitan, Sicilian, Roman, New York, St. Louis, Detroit — off one menu. That range is unusual anywhere, and it is the reason the room stays full on a Wednesday.
It is also a restaurant with one firm rule: no reservations, ever. The only lever available to you is the in-person daily waitlist. Doors open at noon and the kitchen runs to 10pm Monday through Thursday and to 11pm Friday through Sunday. If you arrive at 7:30pm on a Saturday expecting to be seated, you have misread the building.
The 73-Pizza Rule, and How to Beat It
The single most useful fact about Tony's is a number. The Margherita — the pie that won the World Pizza Cup in Naples — is capped at 73 per day, because it is made only in the 900°F wood-fired oven and Gemignani will not push that oven past what it does well. Caputo red flour, San Marzano tomatoes, fior di latte, basil, olive oil. Nothing else.
Gemignani has said plainly that they make 73 daily and run out every day. That is not marketing scarcity; it is an oven constraint. The practical consequence is that a 9pm arrival is a Margherita gamble and a 12:30pm arrival is not. If the Margherita is the reason you came, eat lunch instead of dinner. If you arrive late and it's gone, the Sicilian and the Detroit are made in different ovens and are not subject to the cap.

Golden Boy and the Square-Slice Economy
Two blocks away at 542 Green Street, Golden Boy has been selling Sicilian squares out of a walk-up window since 1978. There are no tables to speak of and no ceremony at all. You point, you pay, you eat standing at the counter or on the sidewalk. The clam-and-garlic square is the order people cross town for; the pesto square is the one they order second and regret not ordering first.
Hours are the thing to internalize here. Golden Boy runs 11:30am to 9pm Sunday through Thursday and stays open until 11pm on Friday and Saturday, which makes it one of the few genuinely reliable late options in North Beach. If you live west and don't want the crowds, the second shop at 1447 Taraval Street in the Parkside sells the same squares — 11:30am to 8:30pm most days, until 9pm on Friday and Saturday. Same pans, a quarter of the queue.
The Neapolitan Map Changed This Year
If you are working from an older list, delete one entry. Del Popolo closed its dining room at 855 Bush Street on May 8, 2026, after more than ten years and a Michelin mention. The business did not fail — it moved. Del Popolo now puts its sourdough pies into grocery freezers, distributing to more than a hundred stores including Whole Foods locations across California, Nevada and Arizona. Excellent pizza, no longer an address you can walk into.
The North Beach replacement, in practice, is Flour + Water Pizzeria at 532 Columbus Avenue, open daily 11:30am to 10pm. It is the pizza-first offshoot of the Mission restaurant at 2401 Harrison Street, which now runs dinner only, 5pm to 9:30pm. The pizzeria is the one you want when you have a group, a normal appetite, and no interest in a tasting menu.
The Outer Richmond Counter-Argument
Pizzetta 211 at 211 23rd Avenue is the opposite proposition in every way: a small room out past Lake Street, a menu that rewrites itself weekly around whatever the kitchen found that week, and roughly twenty seats. It takes no reservations. It is open Tuesday through Sunday, noon to 9pm, closed Mondays.
The rotating menu is the point and also the risk — the pie you read about last month is probably gone. Check the current week before you drive out, because the Outer Richmond is a long way to go for a pizza you weren't planning on. Go anyway when the weather is bad; the fog makes that room feel like the reason people move here.
Deep-Dish, the Mission Version
Little Star at 400 Valencia Street is the argument for the other kind of pizza entirely: a cornmeal crust, a deep pan, and a forty-minute bake that means you order first and talk after. It runs 11:30am to 10pm Sunday through Thursday and to 11pm on Friday and Saturday. Order the moment you sit down, and treat the wait as part of the plan rather than a surprise.
Practical notes
Tony's Pizza Napoletana, 1570 Stockton St, noon–10pm Mon–Thu and noon–11pm Fri–Sun, walk-in waitlist only, full bar. Golden Boy Pizza, 542 Green St, 11:30am–9pm Sun–Thu and until 11pm Fri–Sat; second shop at 1447 Taraval St. Flour + Water Pizzeria, 532 Columbus Ave, daily 11:30am–10pm. Pizzetta 211, 211 23rd Ave, Tue–Sun noon–9pm, walk-ins only. Little Star, 400 Valencia St, 11:30am–10pm Sun–Thu and until 11pm Fri–Sat. North Beach is walkable from the Powell-Mason cable car and the 30 Stockton; the Outer Richmond needs the 1 California or the 38 Geary and a short walk north. Hours drift, especially on holidays — confirm the same day for anything after 9pm.
