Upper West Side Winter Sunrise Photo Route Planner: The Lake
Central Park opens at 6 am, so a free Upper West Side sunrise shoot can start on the Lake's west shore near 72nd Street, then catch the San Remo glowing gold.
Central Park is open from 6 am to 1 am, and on the Upper West Side that opening time is the starting gun for a winter sunrise photo route planner. The neighborhood's advantage is geometry: it sits on the park's western edge, so from the west shore of the Lake you look east across open water toward where the sun comes up. Behind you, the twin-towered apartment buildings of Central Park West face directly into that first light. One short walk gives you both shots, for free.

Viewpoint One: The Lake's West Shore
Enter at West 72nd Street and Central Park West, just past the Dakota, completed in 1884 and one of the city's most recognizable apartment houses. Follow the path past Strawberry Fields and the Imagine mosaic, which is quiet and nearly empty at dawn, and continue toward the water. Within a few minutes you reach the west shore of the Lake.
Look east. Across the water, Bow Bridge arcs over the Lake, a cast-iron span completed in 1862 and among the oldest of its kind in the country. Behind it rises the dense woodland of the Ramble. In midwinter, the sun climbs out of the trees almost directly beyond the bridge, and on still, cold mornings mist or thin ice on the water catches the glow.
This is the frame most photographers come for, so arrive early. A wide lens around 24mm keeps the bridge small and the sky dominant, while a 50mm crops in on its graceful curve. Bracket heavily, because the bright disc against dark trees can easily blow out.
Viewpoint Two: Turn Around for the Central Park West Towers
Once the sun clears the trees, spin around. The famous twin towers of the San Remo, completed in 1930 at Central Park West and 74th Street, face east toward the park and catch the morning sun head-on. For a few minutes, their temple-like crowns glow gold against a deep blue western sky, while the trees below are still in shadow.
A telephoto lens is essential here. From the Lake's shore or the lawn near the Hernshead, frame the towers through bare branches to give a sense of place. This is the image that people do not expect from a sunrise walk, and it is often the stronger shot of the morning. The Dakota's gables and dormers also light up well if you walk back south.
Viewpoint Three: The Hernshead and Ladies' Pavilion
Just north along the west shore, a rocky outcrop called the Hernshead juts into the Lake. Its small, ornate cast-iron Ladies' Pavilion, moved to this spot in the early twentieth century, makes a delicate foreground against the water. With the sun now a little higher, side light picks out its lacy ironwork.
Climb carefully onto the rocks for a lower angle across the water, but watch for ice. The surfaces here can be slick on frosty mornings, and a fall with a camera is the fastest way to end a winter shoot.
Which Viewpoint to Prioritize
If you only have time for one, choose the west shore of the Lake facing Bow Bridge. It delivers the actual sunrise, the classic Central Park composition and the strongest seasonal mood. The San Remo glow is a close second and works even when clouds block the sunrise itself, as long as there is a gap in the east.
Skip trying to cover Bethesda Terrace in the same window. It is farther east, and by the time you get there the low color has gone. Save it for a separate morning, when you can approach from the east side instead.
Your Winter Kit Checklist
• A wide lens for the Lake and a telephoto for the towers; a 24–105mm plus a 70–200mm covers everything.
• A compact tripod for the dim minutes before sunrise.
• Spare batteries in an inside pocket, since cold drains them quickly.
• Thin liner gloves under warmer mittens.
• Shoes with grip for icy paths and rocks.
• A lens cloth, because condensation forms the moment you step into a warm café afterward.
Timing and Getting There
Sunrise moves from just after 6:30 am in early November to past 7:15 am by late December. Because the park opens at 6 am, early November sunrises leave only a short window, so be at the 72nd Street entrance right at opening. In December you will have more time to walk in and set up in the blue hour.
The 72nd Street station on the B and C lines lets out right at the Dakota, steps from the entrance. The 72nd Street station on the 1, 2 and 3 lines at Broadway is a slightly longer walk east past the Beaux-Arts Ansonia, completed in 1904, whose rounded corner towers are worth a frame on your way. The whole route inside the park is under a mile.
A Cloudy-Morning Plan B
If the eastern sky is thick with clouds, the sunrise over the Lake will be dull. On those days, focus on mood. Gray light suits the bare trees and the bridge, and mist on the water looks more dramatic without competing sunlight. Alternatively, head west to Riverside Park, where the overcast light flatters the old stone walls and the Hudson views have a calm, silvery tone.
Snow changes the calculation entirely. After an overnight snowfall, go regardless of cloud cover and get there right at opening, before the paths are trampled. Fresh snow on the Bow Bridge railings and the Ladies' Pavilion roof is rare and short-lived, and the even white ground bounces soft light back into the shadows. Shoot slightly overexposed to keep the snow bright rather than gray, and protect the camera from falling flakes with a simple rain cover or a plastic bag.
Organizing the Shoot With Karpo APP
Karpo APP can help you turn these viewpoints into a plan. Tell it you want a sunrise route on the Upper West Side with both the Lake and the Central Park West towers, and ask for a sequence plus a nearby café to warm up afterward. You can ask follow-up questions to shorten the loop or add Riverside Park for another morning.
It does not track live light or weather, so check the sunrise time and forecast yourself the night before. What it gives you is a clear plan you can follow in the dark.
Ask Karpo for more information.
