Astoria Vinyasa Yoga Studio, $12 Drop-In Classes: Yoga Agora
Yoga Agora runs $12 classes on the second floor of 33-02 Broadway in Astoria, and the 7am weekday slot is donation-based. The entrance is on 33rd Street.
Yoga Agora charges $12 for a regular class on the second floor of 33-02 Broadway in Astoria, and its earliest class every day is donation-based. That makes it one of the cheapest ways to practice flow-style yoga in New York City. Do not look for a door on Broadway itself: the entrance is around the corner on 33rd Street, and the stairs lead up to a single wood-floored room with windows on two walls.
A Meeting Place Named After the Greek Agora
The studio has served Astoria since 2010. Its About page explains the name: the agora was the central meeting place of the ancient Greeks, a fitting choice in a neighborhood long shaped by Greek families. A 2014 profile in Give Me Astoria credits Nick Velkov with founding it after his own search led him to yoga. Back then a class cost $5, and the same article described an intimate space with classes nearly always filled.
Velkov still appears on the teacher roster and leads one of the 2026 outdoor sessions. During the summer of 2020, under the city's Open Streets program, he taught outside in the street and in Astoria Park every day for months, and that habit of practicing in public never quite stopped. The payment line for donations still reads NV Yoga, Inc., a small reminder that this is an independent neighborhood studio rather than a chain. A 2020 profile in The Click described the room as intimate, with sleek wooden floors, lush plants and two walls of floor-to-ceiling windows, sitting above a sushi restaurant on Broadway.
Is It Really a Vinyasa Studio?
Here is the honest answer. The timetable does not label classes by style. Sessions are named by start time, such as the 11am class or the 7pm class, and the style depends on the teacher. Several instructors list vinyasa training in their bios, and Andrea teaches Dharma Yoga, which the studio describes as challenging yet devotional, graceful and heavily influenced by vinyasa, with plenty of inversions and arm balances. Cassie and Audrey both list vinyasa teacher training, and Kelley's bio is rooted in vinyasa as well, so their slots are the safest bets for a classic breath-linked flow.
So read the teacher bios before booking. If you want a strong, breath-linked flow, choose a class led by one of the vinyasa-trained teachers and expect sun salutations, standing sequences and an inversion or two. If you want something slower, the Basics Class and the Friday Candlelit Restorative are the gentler options. The studio welcomes practitioners of all levels and backgrounds, and nobody checks credentials at the door.
What You Pay
The schedule page lists one price for regular classes: $12 per class. There is no intro offer, class pack or membership on the site, which keeps things simple for visitors. The early classes, 7am on weekdays and 8am on weekends, are donation-based and can be paid in cash, by card when indoors, or through Zelle. Mat rental costs $1, and only for those donation classes, so regular-class students should bring their own mat or ask at the desk.
Other events cost more. Pilates is $20, the Full Moon Cacao Gathering is $30, and an occasional Thai Massage workshop on Saturday evenings is also $30. The Sunday 8:15pm meditation is free. Compared with Manhattan studios where a single class runs well above $30, a week of practice here can cost less than one drop-in across the river, which is exactly why the small room fills. Prices have crept up slowly over the years, from $5 in 2014 to $12 today, which is still a fraction of a Manhattan drop-in.
The Weekly Rhythm
From Monday to Thursday, the first class starts at 7:00am and the last at 7:00pm, with 60-minute slots at 2pm and 5:30pm and 75-minute slots at 11am and 7pm. Friday stretches until the 8:45pm Candlelit Restorative. Saturday runs from 8:00am, with the last regular class at 5:00pm. Sunday starts at 8:00am and ends with a 6:30pm class followed by the free meditation at 8:15pm. Look at the day's list in the Recess app the night before, because each slot shows its teacher, its length in minutes and whether it is a donation class.
The one consistent piece of advice from reviewers is to arrive early. A Baruch student blog called it a small space that fills up quickly and noted that the sounds of busy Broadway drift in through the windows, which the writer liked. If street noise bothers you during savasana, choose the weekend 8am class, when Broadway is quieter and the neighborhood is only just waking up.
Outdoor Classes in Astoria Park
In good weather the studio moves outside. The 2026 outdoor schedule runs Fridays at 12pm on the upper observation deck of the Astoria Park pool, with views of the Hell Gate Bridge. Enter the park at 19th Street and 23rd Terrace and walk west toward the river. All outdoor sessions are 60 minutes and donation-based, you must bring your own mat, and rain cancels class, as it did on October 16.
Before and After: A Short Astoria Loop
After an evening class, walk south toward 35th Avenue and the Museum of the Moving Image, which is worth a separate afternoon for its film and game exhibits. On a weekend morning, head north instead to Athens Square Park on 30th Avenue, whose Greek columns and statues of Socrates and Athena echo the studio's name. Broadway itself is lined with Greek bakeries and cafes for a post-class coffee.
Practical Notes
Take the N or W to Broadway, or the M or R to Steinway Street, and walk to the corner of 33rd Street. Booking runs through the studio's Recess app at yoga-agora.recess.tv. Private sessions are available, though no price is posted, so ask the teacher directly after class. Workshops such as the summer Saturday Night Meditation Retreat, which ran on August 1 for $25, are announced on the workshops page, so look there before planning a special evening.
