Manhattan Beach Russian Restaurant, $13 Borsch: LOFT
LOFT by Hot Potato at 109 Oriental Blvd, Manhattan Beach, opens 11am daily, until 11pm on Fri and Sat. Its $13 borsch comes with a free meat puff pastry.
LOFT by Hot Potato, at 109 Oriental Boulevard in Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn, is the grown-up second act of Hot Potato House, a neighborhood Russian and Eastern European spot that ran for more than nine years before the rebrand. It is open every day from 11am to 10pm, until 11pm on Friday and Saturday. A bowl of borsch costs $13 and arrives with a complimentary meat puff pastry, and the kurnik pie takes an hour to bake, so order it when you sit down.

From Hot Potato House to LOFT
Hot Potato House built its following as a casual local staple, and the owners kept the name in the new title rather than starting from scratch. The menu now leans toward what the restaurant calls modern Eastern European cuisine, which in practice means the Russian and Ukrainian classics that Brighton Beach grew up on, plated a little more carefully and served in a brighter, loft-style room.
The rebrand also turned the space into an events venue. LOFT runs a calendar of jam sessions, jazz nights and themed parties, and it was listed as a Restaurant Guru 2026 recommendation. For a neighborhood that is mostly quiet brick houses and water views, it is one of the few places on Oriental Boulevard where a weeknight dinner can turn into a party.
What to Order: Soups, Dumplings and Draniki
The soups are the bargain. Borsch is $13 and comes with that free puff pastry stuffed with meat, a generous touch that turns a starter into a light lunch. The solyanka is $15, a thick broth loaded with several meats and smoked sausages. The fish soup, ukha, is $13 and lighter, a good choice if you plan to eat dumplings afterward. Order one soup per person and you will have a sense of the kitchen within ten minutes.
For dumplings, the classic version at $19 mixes pork, beef and chicken, and the vareniki with potato are also $19, with a choice of sour cream or fried onions. Take the fried onions. The classic potato draniki, the crisp grated pancakes, are $14 and should be shared as a side rather than eaten as a main, because they arrive hot and heavy. Between two people, one soup each, one dumpling plate and a draniki portion is plenty.
The Kurnik Rule
The menu's showpiece is the kurnik, a domed Russian chicken pie traditionally baked for weddings. It costs $70 and the menu warns that it needs an hour of preparation. Ask for it the moment you are seated, or better. It feeds a table of four to six, so it only makes sense for a group, and it is the one dish here that you will not easily find elsewhere in south Brooklyn.
The honest verdict: if you are two people, skip the kurnik and the long wait. The soups and dumplings already show off the kitchen, and the money is better spent on a round from the bar, where the menu includes house-infused vodkas alongside draft beer, wine and cocktails.
Saturday Retro Night and the Event Calendar
Every Saturday from 7pm to 11pm the restaurant hosts a 90s and 2000s retro night, aimed squarely at the neighborhood's Russian-speaking regulars who grew up on that pop and still know every chorus. Weeknights are calmer, with specials and occasional live music. The October 2026 calendar includes a jazz night on October 30 and an Odessa-style Halloween party on October 31, so expect costumes and a full room that weekend.
If you just want dinner, avoid Saturday after 7pm, when the music takes over the room. A weekday lunch from 11am is the quietest time and the easiest walk-in. When the dining room is booked for a private event, Tatiana on the Brighton Beach boardwalk, a short drive west, is the nearest Russian alternative with its own Saturday show.
Banquets and Bills
LOFT does a lot of celebrations, and the banquet menus are set per person: the Elite at $75, the Luxury at $110 and the Imperial at $150. The Imperial includes black caviar crepes, baked lobster, lamb chops and beef medallions, and any of the three can add a Samovar Experience and special decorations. For birthdays of ten or more, compare the Elite and the Luxury before you default to the top tier.
Read the bottom of the menu before you pay. An 18% service charge plus tax is added to every bill, so do not tip a second time by mistake. Card payments also carry a 4% convenience fee, which makes cash the cheaper way to settle a large banquet bill.
The restaurant also handles catering and a dedicated memorial luncheon menu, which says a lot about its role in the community: this is where local families come for milestones of every kind, from a child's birthday to a remembrance meal. On those days part of the room may be reserved, so call ahead if you are bringing a group of six or more and want to sit together without a long wait.
A Walk Along Manhattan Beach
Manhattan Beach has no subway stop of its own. The nearest station is Brighton Beach on the B and Q lines, and from there it is a short taxi ride or a longer walk east across Ocean Avenue. Drivers will find residential street parking easier here than on Brighton Beach Avenue.
Before or after dinner, walk east along Oriental Boulevard to Manhattan Beach Park, a quiet stretch of sand with views across the water to Breezy Point and the Rockaways. In late October the beach is empty and the light over Sheepshead Bay on the north side of the neighborhood is the best of the day around sunset. It is a peaceful counterpoint to Brighton Beach's busier boardwalk.
