Lilia has been one of the hardest dinner reservations in Brooklyn for the better part of a decade, and the entire conversation about it happens inside a two-hour window in the evening. That conversation ignores two thirds of the day. The same converted auto body shop on Union Avenue runs a caffe from eight in the morning until four in the afternoon, and then becomes the restaurant everyone is fighting over at four o'clock. Two services, one address, completely different levels of difficulty. If what you want is to be in that room, eat something that came out of that kitchen, and not spend three weeks planning it, you have been looking at the wrong half of the clock.

Two services, one building
Lilia Caffe runs 8am to 4pm, every day. Lilia Ristorante — the dinner room, the one with the reservation problem — runs 4pm to 10pm, every day. The handover is clean: at four in the afternoon the daytime operation closes and the evening one opens.
This is not a coffee cart bolted onto a famous restaurant. It is the same address, the same room, the same converted garage with the tiled floor and the high windows that everyone photographs at dinner, in daylight and without the wait.
The daytime menu is a caffe menu — coffee, pastry, things eaten at a counter — rather than a shortened version of the dinner list. Go for the room, the baking and the espresso, not for a discounted plate of the mafaldini.
Why the afternoon is the underused window
Between roughly two and four in the afternoon the caffe is at its quietest and Williamsburg has not yet turned over into the evening. That is the hour to take someone who wants to see the room without negotiating a reservation, and it is a genuinely pleasant place to sit and do nothing.
The morning is busier than people expect, because the neighbourhood uses it as a neighbourhood coffee shop. Eight to ten on a weekday is a working room; weekend mornings are the busiest part of the daytime service by a distance.
Nothing about the daytime service is bookable, which is the entire point. You arrive, you order at the counter, and the worst case is a short wait for a table rather than a month of refreshing a calendar.
If you do want the dinner room
Dinner is 4pm to 10pm daily, and the first hour is the one people overlook. A four o'clock or half past four table is a real dinner, released on the same calendar as the eight o'clock one, and it is consistently the easiest slot in the building.
The same applies at the other end. Late tables come loose more often than prime ones, and the kitchen does not wind down early — a nine o'clock booking is not a consolation prize.
The pasta is what the restaurant is known for and the wood-fired half of the menu is what people forget to order. If you are going once, order across both rather than three pastas.

This matters because it changes your options when Lilia is full. Misi, in the same borough at 329 Kent Avenue, is the pasta-and-vegetables sister restaurant, and it runs a lunch service on Friday and Saturday from 11:30am — an easier daytime pasta than anything at Lilia.
Misipasta at 46 Grand Street is the retail-and-eatery arm, serving a full menu from 11am to 10pm daily. It is the answer to the specific question of where to eat this kitchen's pasta at two in the afternoon on a Tuesday, which Lilia itself does not answer.
Three addresses, three completely different difficulty settings. Knowing which one you need is most of the problem.
Where it sits, and getting there
Lilia is at 567 Union Avenue, on the northern edge of Williamsburg where it runs into Greenpoint. The Lorimer Street and Metropolitan Avenue stations are the nearest, putting the L and the G both within a short walk.
Parking on Union Avenue is ordinary Brooklyn parking — possible, slow, and not worth building a plan around. The train is faster from almost anywhere in the city.
The blocks around it are residential and quiet in the morning, which is part of why the daytime service works. It does not feel like visiting a destination restaurant at nine in the morning; it feels like a local cafe that happens to be very good at baking.
