Personal Trainer Near Me in SoHo: Hanson Fitness on Wooster Street
Hanson Fitness runs an appointment-only personal training gym at 42 Wooster Street in SoHo, with a $145 trial hour and 10-session packs at $125.
At Hanson Fitness, nobody touches a barbell without a trainer standing next to them. The private gym at 42 Wooster Street in SoHo sells sessions instead of memberships, and its own FAQ says weight lifting is allowed only during a scheduled appointment, which keeps the floor quiet all day.

A Powerlifter's Studio on Cast-Iron Wooster Street
The man behind the name is Harry Hanson, who started lifting weights at 13 and went on to win 15 competitive powerlifting titles before turning training into a business. Allure magazine described the business as a state-of-the-art fitness center in SoHo, and demand eventually pushed him to open a second room at 795 Broadway near Union Square. The company calls itself family owned, and Harry still takes clients at both addresses rather than only appearing on the website.
His reputation came largely from film sets. The studio's biography lists work for Paramount Pictures and Tri-Star Productions, plus clients such as Julianne Moore, Sandra Bullock, Woody Harrelson and members of the New York Rangers, and he wrote a book titled Get Your Rear in Gear. None of that changes what a Tuesday morning session feels like, though: the programming is built on what Harry calls The Fitness System, a string of short-term targets that add up to a longer goal.
What an Hour Costs and What It Includes
Hanson posts its prices openly, which is rarer than it should be among Manhattan private studios. At SoHo, the trial hour is $145, a five-pack works out to $130 a session, and a ten-pack drops to $125 a session. For new clients, the specials page advertises a ten-session SoHo promotion at $105 per hour, available by phone. There is no monthly membership fee layered on top of any of these packages.
By default, trainers rotate, because the studio believes clients benefit from hearing more than one coaching voice. If you want the same person every time, the rates page lists an exclusive ten-pack at $175 a session. Booking Harry himself is $300 an hour, per the FAQ. Our honest take: unless you are preparing for a role or a meet, the rotating ten-pack is the better value, since every trainer works from the same system.
House Rules: Appointments, Cancellations and Free Cardio
The cancellation rule is strict and spelled out: give 24 hours' notice or the session is charged in full, and a no-show counts as a used hour. Packages renew automatically on the card on file unless you say otherwise before your last session, so set a reminder if you only want one round. On the plus side, sessions are transferable, and you have up to two years to use a package.
Paying clients may arrive early or stay late to ride the bikes or treadmill and use the private showers. You can also come in on a day without a booked session for cardio during business hours at no extra cost. What you cannot do is wander over to the squat rack or cable stack on your own; the machines and free weights stay reserved for people training with a coach that hour.
Who You Will Meet on the Floor
The client list skews older and busier than a typical big-box gym. Hanson says many of its clients are over 65, and it runs separate senior sessions for anyone past that age, with goals like bone density, posture and getting up from a chair without help. Adult sessions cover ages 18 to 64, and kids' programs run Monday through Saturday, including after-school sessions for children who need help focusing or simply love to move.
You will also see coaches who do not work for Hanson at all. Independent trainers can rent the SoHo floor for their own clients at $45 for a single hour or $40 an hour on a ten-session pack, with no contract. That arrangement means the room fills with a mix of house trainers and freelancers, but because everyone books through one calendar, it rarely holds more than a few pairs at once.
SoHo or Union Square: Picking Your Location
Both rooms carry the same price list, so the choice comes down to your commute. The SoHo studio sits on Wooster Street between Grand and Broome, a few blocks from the Canal Street stop for the A, C and E trains and from the N, Q, R, W and 6 lines at Broadway and Canal. The Union Square location at 795 Broadway is easier if you ride the L or the 4, 5 and 6 to 14th Street.
If your preferred hour is full at SoHo, ask the desk whether Union Square has the same slot before you settle for a different day. The two studios share staff, and Harry trains at both. For a big-box alternative with open-gym hours, the YMCA's McBurney branch on West 14th Street lets members lift without an appointment, though you lose the empty room that is the whole point of Hanson.
Before or After: A Walk Down Wooster Street
Wooster Street is still paved with Belgian blocks, and the cast-iron facades on this stretch make the walk to your session one of the better warm-ups in Manhattan. Just across the street and a few doors down, The Drawing Center at 35 Wooster Street is free to enter and reopens on October 23 with Form, Shadow, Motion, a show drawn from the Burger Collection in Hong Kong. Its galleries keep Wednesday to Sunday hours from noon to 6 pm.
Head north on Wooster to Prince Street after a morning session and you are in the middle of SoHo's shopping blocks, where a coffee and a slow loop up to Houston is easy to fit into a lunch hour. If your knees are tired, skip the subway stairs at Spring Street and walk the flat blocks east to Broadway, where buses run uptown and down.
