Chicken Wings at Wogies, West Village: 10 for $20

Wogies Bar & Grill at 39 Greenwich Ave serves Krazy Kate's wings, 10 for $20, from 11:30 AM daily. The bar stays open until 2 AM on Fridays and Saturdays.

Wogies Bar & Grill serves its Krazy Kate's wings ten for $20, twenty for $38, fifty for $90 and a hundred for $170, and the West Village bar opens at 11:30 AM every day. Wogies, at 39 Greenwich Avenue, New York, NY 10014, is a Philly-themed bar and grill where the wing recipe belongs to the owner's mother and the cheesesteaks ride on rolls the kitchen bakes every morning. The wings come with celery, carrots and blue cheese or ranch, and you can pick Classic Buffalo in four heat levels or four other flavors.

Who Wogie Was and Why the Wings Say Krazy Kate

The name has a family story. Owner Aaron Hoffman named the bar after his dad, William Hoffman, whom everyone called Wogie. Hoffman says nobody but his mother, Krazy Kate, knows where the nickname came from, and she is not talking. He grew up outside Philadelphia, where his father loved a good cheesesteak, but New York was always his dad's favorite city.

In 2004 Hoffman opened Wogies to bring that Philly comfort to New York, and the bar has since grown to three locations: this one in the West Village, one on Trinity Place in the Financial District and one in Katonah. The kitchen bakes its own bread and makes nearly everything on the menu from scratch. The house philosophy, in Hoffman's words on the website, is good food, cold drinks and a place that feels like home.

The wings take their name from his mother. Krazy Kate's Wings are described on the menu as a secret family recipe, and the heat level at the top of the Buffalo list is spelled with a K to match: Mild, Medium, Hot or Krazy.

The Wing Order: Sizes, Flavors and Prices

Wings are sold by the count and priced to make sharing easy. Ten wings cost $20, twenty cost $38, fifty cost $90 and a hundred cost $170, all served with celery, carrots and your choice of blue cheese or ranch. The bar's website lists events and parties as a service next to takeout and delivery, so the larger counts have a home.

Five flavors are on the menu: Classic Buffalo in Mild, Medium, Hot or Krazy, plus Salt & Pepper, Barbeque, Garlic Parmesan and Honey Mustard. The Salt & Pepper is the one to order if you want to taste the fry and the chicken before the sauce; Garlic Parmesan is the crowd-pleaser for a table with kids or a friend who avoids heat.

If wings are only half your plan, the bar has a second wing-adjacent menu. The Pookie is buffalo chicken fingers and melted provolone with blue cheese or ranch on the side, and it costs $20. Buffalo chicken fingers on their own are $17, and Buffalo chicken spring rolls with blue cheese, sour cream and buffalo sauce are $17. A cup of homemade chili with garlic bread is $12.

Cheesesteaks, Garbage Bread and the Rest of the Menu

This is still a Philly bar, and the cheesesteak is the second reason to come. The classic is chopped steak, grilled onions and cheese on a house-baked roll for $19, and the Buffalo chicken cheesesteak is $20. Mushroom cheesesteak, a vegetarian option with portobellos, is $16. The Original Steaks section includes the Oscar with bacon, peppers and two eggs, and the Fat Jimmy with American cheese, hot peppers, fries and chili, each at $20.

Garbage bread is the shareable. It is house-made bread stuffed with fresh ingredients and baked on the premises, sold as a half loaf for $18 or a full loaf for $29. Choose Original Italian with ham, pepperoni, salami, provolone, mozzarella and parmesan; Buffalo Chicken with cream cheese, blue cheese crumbles and buffalo sauce; Potato; or Broccoli & Cheese. A Philly soft pretzel with cheddar sauce or grain mustard is $12, and fries are $9.

A sensible split for two people is ten wings, a half loaf of Buffalo Chicken garbage bread and a basket of fries, which comes to $47 before drinks. Add a cheesesteak if you are hungry, or a kale Caesar at $16 if you want something green on the table.

Hours, Kitchen Times and When the Room Fills

Wogies keeps two clocks. The bar is open Sun–Wed 11:30 AM–12:00 AM, Thu 11:30 AM–1:00 AM and Fri–Sat 11:30 AM–2:00 AM. Food service starts at 11:30 AM and ends at 10:00 PM from Sunday to Wednesday, then runs to 12:00 AM from Thursday to Saturday.

Reservations, takeout, delivery and events and parties all have their own buttons on the West Village page of the website. The phone number is (212) 229-2171. For a bigger group, call ahead or use the reservations button so the bar can plan the table.

Honest advice: skip the hundred-wing order unless you are actually feeding a crowd. Fifty wings for $90 is already a party order, and the garbage bread and fries fill in the gaps. Start with Medium or Hot before you commit a whole table to Krazy.

Neighborhood Walk After the Wings

Greenwich Avenue is one of the West Village's diagonal streets, where the grid breaks into the older, crooked blocks. After lunch, walk toward Christopher Street and Bleecker Street for the village's small bookshops and bakeries, or head east toward Washington Square Park for a bench and a cup of coffee. Both walks are short and flat.

If you want a second wing stop, the Financial District Wogies on Trinity Place is the sister location and sits within walking distance of the 9/11 Memorial for visitors starting downtown. Each location has its own page on wogies.com with its own hours.
