But the city also runs one of the better cheap-wine ecosystems in the country, built on a specific structure — shops that are also bars, where you pay something close to retail for a bottle and drink it at a table. Once you know which places work that way, and which hours the good windows open, a serious wine night here costs less than a mediocre cocktail.

Happy Wine on Calle Ocho in Little Havana runs the simplest pricing in the city: every glass and every small plate is six dollars. Not a happy-hour price — the price. It is a wine shop with tables, so the room is lined with bottles you can also take home, and the programme runs to free tastings, flamenco nights and rotating winemaker features rather than a cocktail list. It is the correct answer to the question of where to drink well on Calle Ocho without ending up in a two-drink-minimum music room, and it is the best value on this list by a distance.
The eight-dollar window in the Design District
Bar Bevy at 90 NE 39th Street runs an "$8 'til 8" deal from Tuesday through Saturday, 5pm to 8pm — bites, cocktails, beer and wine all at eight dollars apiece. In a neighbourhood where the surrounding restaurants price for people who have just bought a handbag, a three-hour window with everything at a single low number is a genuine anomaly. Go at five, eat there, and leave before the evening prices arrive at eight.
Key Biscayne: happy hour daily, and a $15 way to actually learn something
Vinya Wine & Market runs a full wine and cocktail bar alongside a serious retail shop, with a happy hour every day of the week from 4pm to 6pm covering wines by the glass, cocktails and food. The more interesting thing they do is the Drinking Cru: a casual monthly meet-up at around $15 a head that works through one category at a time. That is what most people mean when they say wine tasting — someone pouring four things in a row and explaining why they are different — and fifteen dollars for it is well below the price of a formal class.
The corkage trick that changes the maths
This is the local move worth internalising. At shop-and-bar hybrids, you can buy a bottle at the retail price on the shelf and drink it at the table for a small corkage charge, rather than paying the bar mark-up on the same wine. On a $40 bottle that is frequently the difference between $40-something and $90-something. Ask at the counter which bottles are eligible and what the corkage is — it is a standard part of how these places operate, and staff will tell you straight.
Lagniappe: the one with the backyard
Lagniappe at 3425 NE 2nd Avenue is not the cheapest option here, but it is the best evening. The list runs to more than two hundred bottles skewed towards small organic, biodynamic and low-intervention producers, the format is a cheese and charcuterie board at a table in a garden, and there is live music every night with no cover charge. It opens at 6pm and runs to 2am, or 3am at weekends. Go on a weeknight — the backyard seating is first-come, and by ten on a Saturday there is nowhere to put a glass down.
How to spend an evening on this properly
Start at five in the Design District for the eight-dollar window and eat something. Move to a shop-and-bar for a bottle at retail plus corkage — that is the part of the night where you drink something you would not otherwise order. Finish in a garden with music that costs nothing. Three stops, no cover charges, and the whole thing lands somewhere under what a single round of cocktails costs on Ocean Drive. The only planning required is knowing that almost every one of these windows shuts at six or eight, which means the cheap version of a Miami wine night starts earlier than you think.
