Bond No. 9 Perfumery, Design District: Pick a NYC Street

Bond No. 9 at 112 NE 41st St, Design District, opens 11 AM to 7 PM Monday to Saturday, noon to 6 PM Sunday. Each scent is named for a New York neighborhood.

Bond No. 9's Miami Design District boutique is at 112 NE 41st St, Suite 102, Miami, FL 33137, and it opens 11 AM to 7 PM Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 PM on Sunday. The hours come from the district's own store listing. This perfumery is unusual because almost every bottle on its shelves is named for a New York street or neighborhood, so a fragrance from Bleecker Street or Lafayette Street ends up being chosen under Miami palm trees.

A New York House With a Miami Outpost

Bond No. 9 takes its name from its headquarters at 9 Bond Street in NoHo, and the round logo is modeled on the old New York subway token. The brand's own history says its perfume debuted in 2003. Founder and CEO Laurice Rahme is described on the company site as the first woman in New York to head a perfumery, and she oversees the bottles and the boutique interiors herself.

The Design District shop followed in 2018. A trade report from that spring said the boutique would open on NE 41st Street on June 1 that year, with about 1,000 square feet of space, crystal chandeliers under an 18-foot ceiling, smoky mirrors and lacquer-red leather chairs that echo the New York flagship. The same report said the Miami team would be bilingual, a sensible plan in a city where many shoppers prefer Spanish.

Choosing a Neighborhood in a Bottle

The fun of shopping here is choosing by place. Bleecker Street, which the brand calls a not-too-heavy day-into-evening scent with violet leaf, cassis, cinnamon, vanilla and caramel, costs $335 for 50ml and $480 for 100ml on the brand's website. Lafayette Street, named for the road around the corner from the NoHo headquarters and described as a smooth oriental fougère with bergamot, coriander and tonka bean, is $355 for 50ml. Tell the staff which New York neighborhood you know best and ask whether its namesake bottle actually suits you, because the names do not always predict the smell.

For something lighter, The Scent of Peace for All, built on pear, tangerine, lentisque, amber and musk, costs $370 for 50ml and $485 for 100ml. Its parent fragrance, The Scent of Peace, earned Rahme the United Nations Women for Peace Award in 2015, according to the brand. An honest note: these perfumes are concentrated and project far, so one spray is plenty in a closed car or office. Try a single spray on skin before you commit to the large bottle.

Every bottle is the brand's star-shaped flacon, painted in different colors and patterns for each scent, so the shelves read like a wall of New York souvenirs. If you like the look more than any one smell, a scented candle in the 6.4oz size costs $135 and carries the same branding.

Small Perks and How Staff Work the Counter

Bond No. 9's site offers a complimentary pocket spray with the purchase of any 100ml fragrance, which is worth asking about at the counter if you are choosing between two scents. The pocket spray can be the runner-up, so you go home with both and decide over a few weeks.

The boutique's red chairs are there to be used. Sit down, smell blotters one at a time, and let the advisor bring the next one to you rather than walking the shelves yourself. A good opening move is to ask for the bottle named after a street you know, then compare it with two or three scents from nearby neighborhoods. It is a quick way to narrow a range that already counted 72 eaux de parfum when this shop opened in 2018, along with custom blends and personalized bottles.

The brand also makes a stronger category. Its history page says that in 2009 Bond No. 9 introduced its Signature Perfume, the house's first 30 percent concentration, which places it in the rare pure-perfume class. Ask to smell it last, after the eaux de parfum, because it is dense enough to cover everything you tried before it.

When to Go and Where to Park

Weekday mornings right after the 11 AM opening are the calmest time, and you will have the room and the chairs mostly to yourself. Saturday afternoons bring the heaviest foot traffic through the district's plazas, so expect to wait for an advisor. Sunday is a short day, noon to 6 PM, which suits a quick visit but not a long consultation.

The Miami Design District lists the Museum Garage as the best parking for this boutique, with Valet 7 as the nearest valet stand. The garage's art-covered facade is a landmark in its own right. If the Design District store is crowded, Bond No. 9 also runs a boutique inside Aventura Mall, Suite 1131, which can be easier on a rainy afternoon.

Walking the Design District Afterward

Step outside and walk to Palm Court, the district's central plaza, where Buckminster Fuller's geodesic Fly's Eye Dome sits under palms. It is a natural place to let a new perfume settle while you look at the architecture. The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, is a few blocks away on NE 41st Street and makes an easy add-on for an art-minded afternoon.

Public art is scattered through the streets, so a slow loop of the district's blocks takes about half an hour. Smell your wrist again at the end. Bond No. 9 fragrances change noticeably after the first hour, and the version you smell outdoors in Miami humidity is the one you will actually live with.
