When a team releases a younger player — one without enough seasons of service time to qualify as a vested veteran — he does not simply become a free agent. He goes "on waivers": a league-wide window in which any of the other 31 teams can put in a claim for him. If a claim comes in, the player's existing contract transfers to the claiming team, no negotiation involved. If nobody claims him within the window, he "clears waivers" and is free to sign wherever he likes — often back with the team that cut him, on the practice squad.
After the league-wide roster deadline on Sunday, August 30, the biggest wave of the year hits the wire at once. Claims from that flood are processed the following afternoon — Monday, August 31 at 1 p.m. Eastern. That Monday deadline is when the real roster news lands: the players your team quietly hoped to sneak onto its practice squad can be claimed away by lunchtime.
Who gets first pick
Claims are not first-come, first-served. Every team holds a waiver priority, and at this point in the year the order tracks the same worst-record-first logic as the draft: the teams that struggled most recently stand at the front of the line. If three teams claim the same guard, the one with the higher priority gets him — the others walk away empty-handed and none the poorer, since a losing claim costs nothing.
The strategy runs deeper than it looks. A claim is a commitment: the player's full contract lands on your books, and a roster spot must open to fit him. Teams near the front of the line sometimes pass on talented players simply because the math doesn't work. Teams at the back rarely bother claiming anyone hotly contested — which is why good teams build their depth in the draft and their bargains after waivers clear.
The vested-veteran exception
