Colombian Fine Dining on the Miami River: Elcielo Miami

Elcielo Miami serves an 18-moment Colombian tasting menu from $245 on Thursdays to $289 on weekends, by the Miami River in Brickell. It closes Tuesdays.

Elcielo Miami brings Colombian fine dining to the north edge of Brickell, where the Miami River meets downtown. Chef Juan Manuel Barrientos, known as Juanma, built his name in Medellín with tasting menus that ask you to touch, smell and even lick the food, and his Miami restaurant has held a Michelin star since the guide arrived in Florida in 2022. It is a theatrical night out and, unusually for a starred room, the price changes with the day of the week.

A Medellín Chef's First Restaurant in America

Barrientos was born in Medellín in 1983 and trained under Iwao Komiyama in Argentina and Juan Mari Arzak in Spain before building Elcielo into a group with restaurants in Medellín, Bogotá, Miami, Washington and New York, plus a hotel in Medellín that opened in March 2021. Miami was the group's first American location, opened in 2015 in a riverside space at the meeting point of downtown and Brickell.

In 2022 the Michelin Guide published its first Florida selection, and Elcielo Miami was among the restaurants awarded a star. It has kept it every year since, including the 2026 statewide edition. Elcielo's Washington restaurant also holds a star, and the Medellín hotel has a Michelin Key.

The kitchen is run day to day by chef de cuisine Leidy Benitez, who has led it since 2022 and is known in the group for her plant-based cooking, with executive sous chef Sebastián Moreno Henao, who has been with Elcielo since 2012 and oversees the American kitchens. Sommelier Diego Otálvaro manages the dining room.

The Experience, Moment by Moment

The tasting menu is called The Experience, and the current Miami version lists 18 moments. It opens with a salpicón and guaro punch, a nod to Colombia's aniseed spirit, then a truffle buñuelo, the Flower Fair, a dry shrimp rice from La Guajira and stone crab empanadas. Mid-meal come corn chawanmushi, hiramasa with pink guava, lobster encocado in coconut sauce and lamb with sunchoke and sawtooth cilantro.

Two moments are the reason people book. Tree of Life is the bread course, presented at the table as a small tree. Chocotherapy is the one everyone films: warm chocolate is poured over your hands, and you eat it off your fingers. Another course is simply titled Lick Me, and the menu ends with a coffee field, cashew turrón, panela cotton candy and rose petals.

Google reviews displayed on Elcielo's own menu page describe the dinner as lasting about one and a half to two hours, quick for this many courses, because most moments are one or two bites. Tell the restaurant about allergies and vegetarian needs well before the night; one recent reviewer complained that emails asking about vegetarian options went unanswered, so call as well as write.

What It Costs, Night by Night

Elcielo uses what it calls dynamic pricing for The Experience. Thursday is the cheapest night at $245 per person. Sunday and Monday cost $255, Wednesday $265, and Friday and Saturday $289. If you are flexible, a Thursday table saves $88 for two compared with a Saturday.

Add-ons are listed in full. The seven-glass wine pairing is $198, a Champagne pairing is $175, and a one-ounce caviar service is $150. Birthday and anniversary experiences, which add special touches to the meal, are $75 each. The Bar Experience, a shorter menu with cocktails at the bar, is $98.

Through October 31, 2026, Elcielo is also part of Miami Spice, with a three-course dinner inspired by its Taste Me menu at $65 per person. It is the least expensive way to try the kitchen, though it skips the signature moments.

Booking, Hours and the River Terrace

Elcielo is open Wednesday through Monday from 6 pm to midnight and closed on Tuesday. Reserve through the booking links on the official site, or call +1 786-694-9525. The tasting menu is served in the dining room, while an outdoor terrace by the water runs as an à la carte bistro with shared plates, grilled dishes, cocktails and wine, good for a drink before your seating.

Ask for a window table when you book; the dining room looks over the river, and watching boats slide past downtown's towers is part of the evening. For groups, private and corporate events can be quoted through the website.

Because the meal moves quickly, a later table works well here; the kitchen serves until midnight, and a 9 pm booking still leaves time for a drink on the terrace first. If you don't want to drive into Brickell, the free Metromover stops at Riverwalk station, a short walk from the door, and connects to Brickell and downtown hotels. Rideshare drop-off is easiest on SE 5th Street itself.

Walking the Miami Riverwalk

The restaurant sits right on the Miami Riverwalk, the public path that follows the river's north and south banks toward Biscayne Bay. Before dinner, walk east along the south bank to where the river meets the bay, then cross the bridge to Brickell Key, a small island with a shaded loop path and long views back to the skyline.

Coming back, you will pass under the Brickell Avenue Bridge, where the bronze statue of a Tequesta family recalls the people who lived at the river's mouth long before Miami existed. The walk takes about 40 minutes at an easy pace and ends back at Elcielo's door. In the evening the river is busy with tugboats, cargo vessels heading upriver and yachts, so the riverside benches make a good place to wait if you arrive before your table.
