Most restaurants in Miami close between lunch and dinner, and for anyone whose day does not run on a standard schedule that gap between half past three and half past five is a dead zone. Michael's Genuine, on NE 40th Street in the Design District, is one of the few kitchens of its standing that does not shut. It runs a dedicated afternoon service through exactly that window, six days a week, and it is the most useful and least discussed thing about the restaurant. If you have ever finished something at four in the afternoon and wanted a real meal rather than a snack, this is the room that solves it.
The gap between lunch and dinner is when most kitchens close and most plans fall apart. Ask Karpo what is actually serving in Miami at the hour you are hungry.
The afternoon service is a real service
Lunch runs Monday to Saturday, 11:30am to 3:30pm. Afternoon service runs Monday to Saturday, 3:30pm to 5:30pm. Dinner starts at 5:30pm Monday to Saturday and runs to 10pm.
That afternoon block is not a bar snack menu or a soft close with the kitchen winding down. It is a scheduled service in its own right, and it is why this restaurant is worth knowing about specifically at four in the afternoon.
It is also, unsurprisingly, the easiest table in the building. The Design District at that hour is shopping and galleries rather than dining, and a room that is impossible at eight on a Friday is straightforward at four on a Thursday.
Sunday runs differently
Sunday brunch runs 11am to 5pm — a long service that covers the same middle-of-the-day gap in a different form. Sunday dinner then runs 5pm to 8pm, which is earlier both ways than the rest of the week.
So the Sunday shape is brunch straight into an early dinner, with no afternoon service as such because the brunch already covers it. The thing to watch is the 8pm Sunday close, which is two hours earlier than the weekday finish.
If you are planning a late Sunday dinner here, do not. Book somewhere else or eat earlier — arriving at half past eight on a Sunday is the most common way to get this restaurant's hours wrong.
Happy hour overlaps, and that is the value
Happy hour runs Sunday to Friday, 4pm to 7pm. Lay that over the afternoon service and there is a window from four until half past five, six days a week, where you can sit down to a full kitchen at happy hour pricing.
That is the single best-value slot at a restaurant that is otherwise priced like a Design District restaurant. It is also the calmest the room gets.
The overlap ends when dinner starts. From 5:30pm the kitchen is on the dinner menu even though happy hour continues at the bar until seven, so the two things stop being the same proposition.

What to order
The kitchen is seasonal and locally sourced, and the range is wide: wood-fired pizza, house-made pasta, crudo and oven-roasted chicken sit alongside pork belly, crispy pig ears, oysters and short ribs.
The menu is built on small and large plates rather than starters and mains, which makes it work particularly well at an odd hour — you can have three small things at four in the afternoon and it is a coherent meal rather than a half-committed one.
The wood oven is the throughline. If you order one thing, order something that came out of it; the roast chicken and the pizza are the two most reliable expressions of what this kitchen has been doing since it opened.
Where it sits
The address is 130 NE 40th Street, in the middle of the Design District, which means the surrounding blocks are luxury retail and galleries rather than restaurants. That is exactly why the afternoon service is useful — it is the one place to sit down properly in a neighbourhood built for walking around.
It holds a place in the Michelin guide and has been a fixture of Miami dining for long enough to have outlasted most of what opened around it.
Reservations are strongly recommended for dinner, particularly at weekends. For the afternoon service they are far less necessary, which is part of the appeal.
