Miami's restaurant problem is that the good rooms fill weeks ahead and the walk-in options are mostly mediocre. Sunny's, a steakhouse in Little River from the team behind the closed Jaguar Sun, solves it structurally: the dining room takes reservations, and the indoor bar and the terrace do not — those seats are held for whoever arrives, which makes this one of the few genuinely good dinners in the city you can decide on at five in the afternoon.

The walk-in policy is the whole strategy
Bar and terrace seating is first come, first served, and the practical advice is to be there around half past five when service opens. That is early by Miami standards, which is precisely why it works — the people who would otherwise take those seats are still at work.
There is also a daily early window, roughly the first hour of service, with reduced prices on cocktails, snacks and wine. Between the walk-in policy and that hour, arriving at opening is both the easiest and the cheapest way to eat here, which is an unusual combination.
A steakhouse that is not a steakhouse
The format borrows the steakhouse vocabulary without the wood panelling and the expense-account atmosphere: live fire, a serious cocktail programme inherited from the team's previous bar, and a menu that pays as much attention to vegetables and seafood as to beef. It is closer to a very good bar that cooks than to a traditional chophouse.
Order accordingly. Something from the raw or cold section, something charred that is not beef, and then one piece of meat shared across the table. A table of four ordering four steaks will have spent a lot of money and missed most of what the kitchen is good at.
The cocktails are inherited
The previous room from this team built its reputation on drinks, and that lineage is the reason to sit at the bar rather than at a table even if a table were available. A cocktail programme run by people who came up in a cocktail bar is a different proposition from a steakhouse list of three classics and a house martini.
Ask what the bartender is making rather than reading the list top to bottom, and if you are eating at the bar, order the food in rounds rather than as courses. That is how the seats are designed to be used.
Little River, and getting there
Little River sits north of the Design District and west of the bay, a former warehouse and light-industrial district that has been filling with studios, galleries and restaurants for a decade without ever becoming a walkable strip. There is no promenade and no obvious second stop within sight.
So drive or take a car, park once, and stay. If you want a second stop, treat it as a separate short drive rather than a walk — the blocks between destinations here are wide, dark and not built for pedestrians, which is the standard Miami condition outside a handful of neighbourhoods.
Walking in rather than booking changes how you should behave at the door, and a little of it goes a long way. Give an accurate party size, be willing to split across two bar seats rather than holding out for a pair together, and take the terrace if the indoor bar is full — the outdoor seats at a Miami restaurant in the cooler months are usually the better half anyway. If the host says forty-five minutes, that is a real number rather than a negotiation, and there is nothing to gain by hovering at the stand.
The other thing worth knowing is that walk-in seats turn over faster than dining rooms, because people at a bar eat in rounds and leave when they are done. A queue at half past five that looks discouraging is usually shorter than it appears by six.
The early hour is the whole trick
There is a wider pattern worth internalising in this city: Miami eats late, which means the first ninety minutes of service at almost every good restaurant are underused. Half past five gets you a walk-in seat, a discounted drinks window, a kitchen that has not yet been hit, and staff with time to talk.
It also means you are out by half past seven with the evening intact, which is the version of this that works on a weeknight. Going at nine on a Saturday is the same restaurant with none of the advantages and all of the queue.
Little River is also worth understanding as a neighbourhood rather than an address. It was warehouses, garment workshops and small manufacturing for most of the twentieth century, with a large Haitian population in the blocks around it, and the studios and restaurants that arrived over the past decade sit inside that fabric rather than replacing it. The result is a district where an expensive dinner and an active loading dock are on the same block, which is either jarring or the most honest thing about Miami depending on how you look at it.
