Broadway houses empty between about ten and half past, and roughly a dozen theatres release audiences onto the same few blocks within twenty minutes of each other. Every restaurant with a wait gets one, every restaurant without a wait gets a queue, and the pricing in the immediate area is calibrated for exactly that moment.
The same pattern repeats after events at the arena a few blocks south, and after the New Year and holiday crowds. What it is not
It is not a reason to be in Times Square and it is not a New York experience. The room is loud, crowded and functional, and at peak the seating is fully occupied by people who bought one coffee three hours ago. Nobody should plan a meal here.
Used as infrastructure rather than as a destination — the thing that is open, the bathroom that exists, the fifteen minutes of sitting down between the show and the train — it does its job well, and Times Square gives you very few other options that do.
Getting there and getting home
The address is a two-minute walk from the Times Square-42nd Street complex, which serves the 1, 2, 3, 7, N, Q, R, W and S lines, and a similar distance from the A, C and E at 42nd Street and the B, D, F and M at 47th-50th Streets Rockefeller Center.
That density is the practical reason to eat here rather than somewhere better fifteen blocks away when it is late. Overnight the subway runs on long headways, and being three minutes from a major interchange is worth a great deal more at four in the morning than a marginally better sandwich.
