Maru's Los Feliz room at 1936 Hillhurst Avenue is minimal in a way that is genuinely a design position rather than a lack of budget: light woods, white walls, and equipment placed so that the coffee-making is the visual centre of the space. It is also small, with limited seating inside, and that is not an oversight either.

The seating is the thing to plan around
There are not many seats and they go quickly. On a weekend morning in Los Feliz you should expect to stand, take your coffee outside, or wait. If your plan was two hours at a table with a laptop, this is the wrong room and there is no version of the day where it becomes the right one.
That constraint is deliberate. A small room with few seats turns over quickly, which keeps the queue moving and keeps the space from becoming a co-working floor. It is a legitimate choice and it produces a genuinely calm room — it just requires you to arrive with the right expectation.
Seven to five, with a later weekend start
Monday through Saturday the room opens at seven in the morning and closes at five in the afternoon. Sunday it opens at eight and closes at the same time. That is a daytime schedule with an early start and no evening service at all.
The seven o'clock open is the useful end and the five o'clock close is the constraint. Los Feliz has a substantial evening scene along Hillhurst and Vermont, and this room is simply not part of it. Anything you want from Maru has to happen before the neighbourhood's night begins.
The coffee is the point of the design
When a room is stripped to light wood and white walls, what is left to look at is the equipment and the process, and that is the intent. The brewing is done in front of you with deliberate care, and the pace of service reflects that rather than fighting it.
Order a pour-over and accept that it takes a few minutes. That is the room's entire proposition, and ordering a large iced drink to go and leaving immediately is a perfectly reasonable thing to do but it means you have been to a different café than the one that exists here.
Los Feliz around it
Hillhurst Avenue is the neighbourhood's main commercial spine, with Vermont Avenue running parallel a few blocks east and Griffith Park immediately north. It is one of the more genuinely walkable neighbourhoods on the east side of Los Angeles.
The obvious sequencing is coffee at seven or eight, then Griffith Park — the Fern Dell entrance is a short drive or a long walk north, and the observatory trails are considerably better before the heat and the crowds. That is one of the best mornings available in the city and it starts here.
Parking and arriving
Hillhurst has metered street parking and the surrounding residential streets are permit-heavy, which is the standard Los Feliz situation. Early morning is manageable; from mid-morning onward it becomes a search, and on a weekend it is a real one.
If you are staying nearby, walk. The neighbourhood is compact and the blocks between Hillhurst, Vermont and Los Feliz Boulevard are pleasant on foot in a way that most of Los Angeles is not.
The Arts District room
There is a second Maru on South Santa Fe Avenue in the Arts District downtown, which serves a completely different part of the city and applies the same minimal approach. If you are downtown, that is the one to use rather than driving east.
Both rooms share the design language and the coffee programme. The Los Feliz one has the neighbourhood around it; the Arts District one has the warehouse context. Which is better depends entirely on what you want to do afterwards.
Ordering to take away
Given the seating situation, a substantial proportion of the business here is takeaway, and the room is set up for it — the queue moves, the handoff is quick, and nobody expects you to find a table. Ordering to go is the default rather than the compromise.
If you are walking, the drinks travel well for the ten minutes it takes to get anywhere useful in Los Feliz. A coffee from here and a walk up toward Los Feliz Boulevard and the park entrance is the version of this visit that works regardless of how full the room is when you arrive.
Who this room is for
If you want somewhere quiet to drink a carefully made coffee for twenty minutes, this is close to ideal and there are not many rooms in Los Angeles that do it as well. The lack of clutter is genuinely restful in a city that is rarely restful.
If you want a laptop, a plug and a couple of hours, look elsewhere and do not resent the room for it. Los Feliz has options for that within a few blocks, and Maru is explicit about what it is. Matching the room to the visit is most of the skill in using this neighbourhood well.
